As Jason's hand gripped my arm to rapidly guide me away from the moaning warden, a loud, sharp siren noise pierced my ears. I slammed my hands to shield myself from the penetrating noise. Get out.
My feet automatically took off in any direction they could. Skidding round the corner, I heard a faint shouting over the wailing of the alarm. Left. Right. The corridors twisted and turned with no obvious escape route. Jason pulled me through a large, grey door. At the end of our newly found corridor lay a gate - our way out. The night air bellowed in through the gaps in the bars.
Just as we began to gain speed once again, a steel cover slammed down in front of the gate, sealing us off from the outside world. I looked round to Jason. His face was a picture. It told me all I needed to know. We were stuck.
Why did we run?
My heart thudded against my chest as I saw a police officer standing in the door we'd come through. His shadow stretched across the dusty pathway, reaching our feet. There was a glint in his eye. "Come here. You're in enough trouble, let's get you back inside."
Jason sneered at the pathetic attempt to get us to follow him. I wanted this to be over... I wanted to go to him. "Jason, come on. Let's just go back."
"Olivia, please. I can handle this on my own. If we go back, you'll be arrested and I may never see you again." Jason pleaded with me, holding my arms and facing me, his eyes locked on mine.
"We won't get arrested; it's just petty theft Jason. That's community service at most!" I begged him to listen to me.
"Assault, theft and attacking a police officer, Olivia. That's serious, we need to just get away ok!" His eyes were full of terror.
Two more shadows appeared behind the first. Two more men. They started closing in on us. We both spun round, protectively. He put his arm in front me of me.
Leaving your cell was one thing but resisting "capture" was another. I tugged desperately at Jason's sleeve for any sign of withdrawal. Nothing. As the first officer got within two meters, Jason suddenly yelled, "STOP RIGHT THERE." His voice ricocheted round the eerie corridor. "I WOULDN'T COME ANY CLOSER."
"Jason, please...." My voice faded out as he widened his legs, sticking to his ground. I felt my heart sink to the floor. I looked pitifully at the guard whose eyes met mine with a look of determination. He was pleading with me and I knew it... Jason wouldn't listen.
Confidence won't get you anywhere. Confidence was not what Jason had in mind.
The officer still advanced, creeping closer to us with his hands at arm’s length. "GET BACK!" Jason's voice boomed again. This time, he reached into his pocket and revealed a small, tightly packed gun. It glinted in the dim lighting, reflected off the guards shocked face.
