The next morning Jane and the other interns will study under the skilled army combat medics, assist them and learn.

A tall, broad white man stood on the ground in his army dress with a label saying Dr. Hardely.

Behind him are extended tents with beds with sky blue sheets and pillows, IVs drips and other necessary surgical tools.

good morning people! I am Dr Hardely Bennett and I will be your teacher this year and the next years. Stay strong and be meaningful. Our job is to save lives and you must be prepare to go to any extent to do so. We don't do it clean and organised here, we do it quick and save as many lives as possible. There is no time to think, the more time you spend thinking the more the patients' get worst. Good luck!!!

There were many beds some occupied by patients, all army personals.

Suddenly a helicopter is heard, and comes in five stretchers with soldiers lying injured on them.

The men were involved in an operation and an unexpected explosion injured them.

I want two interns with each patient, survey their injuries, stick them up and make sure the chances of infection are zero. lets do this people!!!

Everyone takes one and starts treating them assisted by Dr Hardely.

Jane and another intern gets a patient with a single rupture on his shoulder, they stop the bleeding and stitches up his wound.

you are going to be alright now.

Thank you . Have anybody seen my partner, I haven't seen him since the mission began.

Jane: (Looks at her fellow intern) he should be here. Can you describe him?

His name is Schmidt; he is tall, red head.

I'll go look for him

leaving her patient under her fellow intern, Jane leaves to see if Schmidt made it to the hospital.

Suddenly the door opens and a man is brought in on a stretcher.

Jane rushes to see, he matches the description. The explosion crumbled his both legs. He was conscious, screaming in pain.

Jane: Schmidt, Schmidt.

Dr. Hardely: do you know him?

No the patient I was with, he asked me to find him.

Okay then, I need you to calm him down, I am going to check his arteries; it can be quite painful.

Schmidt: my legs, my legs I can't feel my legs!! Oh god I can't feel my legs!!

Jane: Schmidt Schmidt Schmidt look there your friend, he told me to find you, he is worried about you.

Schmidt grunts in pain.

I know it hurts, I know, we will fix you okay?

Schmidt starts to move, on his stretcher desperate to move his legs.

calm him down!

Schmidt listen to me, shut up!

Schmidt: ......

Dr Hardely: this is going to hurt, (Jane holds Schmidt's palm)

He and the three doctors turn him to check his spine. He shouts in pain and grabs Jane's palm so hard; it almost breaks.

Schmidt grunts in pain.

good, how old is he?

he will be six this month.

then I want you, to imagine your son running towards you, you need to be strong, you need to think about him. What will he do if you give up on yourself?

The doctors are ready, they need to stitch up his arteries and stop the bleeding. He is taken in a sterilised compartment where he is operated on.

Schmidt is told that he won't be able to walk again after he wakes up from the surgery.

Jane: I am so sorry Schmidt.

I am sorry too, I joined the army, I was aware of the consequences. I will get over it. Thank you. (He cries)

for what? (She feels guilty)

for giving me hope.

get some rest, I will keep visiting you.

As Jane was leaving for her compound. She collides into Dr Hardley.

you did very well today, keep this work up and you will be successful. You have the potential.

no offence Dr Hardely, but we couldn't even save his legs, I didn't do anything.

there was nothing we could have done, his bones were broken, arteries ruptured. At least because of you he is not denying the truth.

Dr Hardley nods and walk away.

Jane was exhausted; she showered and sat on the ground leaning to her bed. Her roommate was at the dining compound.

She rubs his hands against her scalp and thinks about Schmidt.

Someone knocks on her door.

Come in.

you okay, you didn't show up for the dinner.

no I am not okay.

Jed come sits next to her.

how was the training?

it was mayhem. There was this man, an explosion took his both legs, I told him we could fix him but failed to do so. He won't be able to walk again.

it's not your fault.

I know it isn't my fault but still I saw him bleed, I gave him false hope gosh I even mentioned his son to calm him down.

It's okay Jane, it happens. Things don't often go as we want them to go. And don't worry I will be here for you and help you get through the unfortunate things, I promise.
