56 Die Engel van die Afsterwe

Op middernag het ek ’n raas gehoor,
Asof iemand iets het verby geritsel.
Toe het ek by die venster gaan kyk,
Het ek ’n verrassing van my lewe gehad.

Daar, met swart kleure en swart vlerke,
Het die Engel van die Dood voor my gestaan.
Ons oë het ongemoet,
Ek het vir hom gee groet,
En hy't vir my glimlag.

'Moenie bang wees my kind.'
Hy't vir my gesê,
En skielik het hy voor my oë verdwyn.

Translation:
The Angel of Death

At midnight I had heard a noise,
As if someone had rustled something nearby.
When I went to my window to have a look,
I got the surprise of my life.

There, in black clothes and black wings,
Stood the Angel of Death before me.
Our eyes had met,
I greeted him,
And He smiled at me.

'Dont be scared my child.'
He said to me,
And suddenly he disappeared before my eyes.
