That idiot.

That idiot!

When they made it out of here, Ominis thought, he was going to smack Sebastian Sallow hard across the face. He was going to give Allegra a good shake, too, and then maybe kiss her dizzy. What was it about his friends and running headfirst into danger?

Ominis scrambled over the obstacles in his way as he ran across the stone floors of the cavern. He could hear that creature—that dragon—roaring somewhere above him, feel the heat of the air coming from the beat of his wings. But he could also hear—blessedly, thankfully—the sounds of magic. Allegra was fighting back. Of course she was, the brilliant girl.

And he was so close to her. Please, Merlin. No more interruptions.

Off to Ominis' right, something gave a pained gasp. Ominis froze in his tracks. He readied himself for a fight, whirling around to raise his wand.

But then there was another groan, a breath, and then, "Mister Gaunt...?"

He knew that voice. Ominis, stunned, dashed forward. "Professor Fig?" He knelt and searched for the old man with an outstretched hand. "Sir, is that you?"

A callused hand closed around his arm. "What are you doing here, boy!" the Professor reprimanded. "Why aren't you—"

Somewhere overhead, the dragon gave a furious screech. A series of heavy stomps boomed across the ledge as if something gigantic was scurrying across the floor. In the distance, the pair heard someone scream.

"Allegra," Professor Fig breathed. Ominis felt something heavy drop in his stomach. He'd never heard that sound coming from her before. "Merlin, she's been fighting him on her own! Get me up, child..."

Ominis heaved Professor Fig to his feet, not without hearing multiple groans of pain. Eleazar leaned heavily against him. The Slytherin boy put a steadying hand around his Professor's shoulders. As they took their first step, Professor Fig gave a soft hiss, clutching at his lower back.

"Are you alright, sir?"

The concern in his voice was touching, Eleazar thought. Ominis Gaunt was such a sweet boy: nothing like his parents or his brother had been. If there was one good thing in the world, it

was that he'd turned out nothing like his family.

"It's only age, Mister Gaunt," Professor Fig said wearily. "This way."
