Daylight was filtering through the clouds by the time they got back to Scotland. Doctor Cunningham arranged for a carriage and a casket. The orderlies thought it strange that they asked to be dropped off by a pub, but they left without too much complaint, leaving three bedraggled teenagers on the side of the road.

They levitated Anne's casket together as they stepped into Diagon Alley. It was made of simple birch wood, carved with basic decoration, and thinly varnished. Allegra grabbed both Ominis and Sebastian by the hands as she Apparated them to Feldcroft: she didn't trust them to be stable enough to do it on their own.

Ominis listened as Sebastian led them down a familiar flower-paved lane. He pushed open the now-empty Sallow home, leading his friends inside. Nobody spoke. Nobody could bring themselves to. Ominis found a chair and sat, listening to the morning birdsong floating through the air.

After what felt like an eternity, Sebastian spoke.

"Go on back to Hogwarts," he said, voice hoarse. "Tell...I don't know. Tell whoever needs to know." There was a sniff, a ruffle of hair as Sebastian buried his face in his hands. "I need to get things ready for her—for her funeral."

"I'll make some arrangements of my own," Ominis murmured. "She deserves a good headstone. It'll only take a few hours if I pull some strings."

"I'd also like to help." It was Allegra's quiet voice. She lay a hand on Ominis' shoulder. He reached up, tracing her fingers with his own. "Whatever you need, just point me there."

"Thank you," Sebastian said softly. "I'll... I'll send an owl. For now I just...need to be alone."

Ominis rose. He rested a comforting hand on Sebastian's shoulders, then moved away. He heard Sebastian sigh as Allegra gave him a hug and patted him gently on the back.

"Thank you," Sebastian said quietly. "Both of you."

Ominis gave him a nod. Then, chest feeling heavy, he shut the door to the Sallow home.

Allegra pulled him in for an embrace. "I'm sorry, Ominis," she whispered.

He buried his face in her neck.

"As am I." Ominis sighed and squeezed Allegra tighter, letting her hands stroke his hair. "She was a dear friend. I'm glad she's at peace now."

She pulled back and cupped his face in her hands. "Where do you need me?"

"Head on to Hogwarts," Ominis said. "See who'd like to come. We'll hold the ceremony tonight."

"Where will you go?"

"Sirona first," Ominis murmured. "Then I'll go to the stonemasons, have them conjure something nice." He gave Allegra a tired smile. "You should get some rest when you're done, love."

There was a whoosh of magic as Allegra Summoned her broomstick. She gently pressed her lips to his cheek, giving him another tight embrace. "I'll be at the Room," she said. "I'll wait for you there, alright?"

"I love you," Ominis said. The words were still a little unfamiliar on his tongue, but saying them felt right. Allegra gave his hand a squeeze.

"I love you, too." Hearing them back felt even stranger, but those words in her voice were music to his ears. He waved when he felt air rush around him, signaling Allegra's departure.

Mounting his own broom, Ominis flew off to Hogsmeade, dreading the thought of being the bearer of bad news.

Hogwarts was quiet when he returned. It was peaceful, bathed in the warm gentle haze of the afternoon and carrying sounds of soft chatter. Ominis could now feel the exhaustion sinking in around his shoulders. It hit him that they hadn't even slept.
