In a blink, summer was over.
Now Ominis stood in the Chant orchard with Allegra and their friends, waiting to take Portkeys back to their homes. It was a bittersweet end to a summer filled with swimming, wonderful food, and hikes in the sun-covered woods with friends. Their 6th year was only two days away.
Ominis had promised his parents he'd take Lysandra shopping for her school things. He'd also promised—as a way to placate his family—that he'd bring Allegra over to Gaunt Manor.
As Allegra said goodbye to her parents, Ominis felt dread growing in his stomach. Sebastian laid a hand on his shoulder.
"She'll be fine," Sebastian told him.
"I know," Ominis said. "It's myself I'm worried about."
"Ready, children?" Andante was saying. "Make sure you have everything, now."
"We were so happy to have you here," Crescenda added. "Please, come again next summer!"
With a chorus of goodbyes, the group prepared to take their Portkeys home. Snaps of magic echoed in the air as Poppy, Natsai, and Garreth took their Portkeys. Allegra's hand slid into Ominis'. He held it tight, taking in a steeling breath.
"Bye, you two," Sebastian said. "Come see me at the Three Broomsticks when everything's done."
"We'll see you there, Sebastian," Allegra said. With a pop, Sebastian was gone. "Let's go." Her voice was as bright and cheerful.
He sighed and pressed her hands to his lips. "You're far too excited, given what's to come," he told her.
"Would you rather I be scared?" Allegra teased.
"You, my little Gryffindor?" He felt his anxieties slowly washing away as he untied the Portkey pouch. "I wouldn't dream of it."
With a sickening tug and a pull of magic, Ominis and Allegra landed just outside the gates of Gaunt Manor.
Allegra Chant stared up at the heavy iron gates in front of her. In the distance, a sprawling black manor stood on rich green land, shadowed by trees that framed its rooftops. A white stone path led up to the doors, trimmed by deep green bushes. As Ominis pushed the gates open, she felt something wash over her. It was as if a wave of needles were suddenly probing along her skin. The touch of it made her jump and gasp.
"The blood wards," Ominis explained, running soothing hands down her shoulders. "I forgot how invasive they could feel. I'm sorry, love. Are you alright?"
"I'm fine," Allegra told him. Ominis' face was twisted in an anxious expression. She smiled, reaching up with a thumb to rub the knit between his brows. "I'm more worried about you."
"You don't belong here, Allegra, and I mean that in the best of ways," Ominis muttered. He took her hand and began leading her up the white stone pathway. "Let's just get Lysandra and get it over with."
Allegra looked down at her clothes. She was wearing an airy long-sleeved blouse and a deep blue skirt, tied together with a sky-blue ribbon around her collar. She almost wished she'd dressed up.
They came to the front door. Before Ominis even had to knock, it swung open.
"So, my little brother comes home at last." It was a tall man dressed in the deep black and white robes of the Ministry of Magic. His hair was paler than Ominis', his eyes a brighter shade of blue. When the man smiled at her, Allegra nearly tore her gaze away. There was something dark and twisting lurking behind those eyes. "And he's brought home a pretty little friend."
