Amidst the rush of all the cheering, frenzied students from all three schools, and Sebastian's victory, the hospital wing was the single quiet area in all of Hogwarts.
Ominis sat with Allegra on one of the beds, scanning over her body with his wand. They'd both dried off ages ago. The moment they got back to Hogwarts, Allegra had tugged sheepishly on Ominis' sleeve and told him her arm was absolutely killing her. They cut a path through the throng of people and made their way to the deserted hospital wing.
Ominis found a bottle of Wiggenweld and Skele-Gro. He walked back over to Allegra, smoothing her hair back and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead.
"Here," Ominis said, pressing the potions into her hands. "Take those. I'm afraid I haven't prepared any orange juice; it's going to be extremely unpleasant."
"Nothing I'm not used to," Allegra sighed. Corks popped as she undid the bottles. Ominis searched for splints and bandages in the medicine cabinet. Somewhere behind him, Allegra coughed and let out a very colorful string of words.
"Don't spit it out," Ominis warned, a little amused.
"That was terrible," Allegra whined. There was another plopping sound of liquid as she followed up the Skele-Gro with a shot of Wiggenweld. Ominis settled on the edge of her bed. He gently patted along her arm to check for swelling, then reached for the splints and bandages.
As he worked on splinting her arm, Allegra's gentle touch rubbed a quick circle between his brows.
"There's your worry line again," she said softly.
Ominis scoffed. "Am I not supposed to worry?" he said indignantly. "You were trapped in that tower against your will. Merlin, you could have drowned or had your soul eaten by those Unholy." He tied off the splint. "All because I asked him to back off. The nerve of that boy...how's that feel?"
"Good, thank you," Allegra said. "I just wish he'd told me," she murmured. "Still. Maybe I shouldn't have hit him."
Ominis scoffed. "Maybe I should have hit him some more."
"Stop that," she chided. "He said he was sorry. But still: getting ambushed by those officials outside the entrance to Gryffindor was not a pleasant experience."
She shifted in the bed and pulled at his sleeve. Ominis settled in beside her, letting her lean against him. He wrapped an arm around her waist, grateful for the feeling of her warm, relatively unharmed presence next to his. They were silent for a few moments. Somewhere below the hospital wing, sounds of cheers and laughter rang against the floor, accompanied by lively music.
"I broke your bracelet," Allegra muttered.
Ominis paused. "My bracelet?"
"I put the pain in there, do you remember?" a note of regret crept into her voice. "I...didn't want to do it. But they took away my wand, and...it was either that or death." She let out a sigh. "I didn't think it would break like that. I'm sorry."
A thread of concern danced up Ominis' spine. "You...absorbed it."
"Yes," Allegra said, voice barely a whisper. "I did. And I was terrified, Ominis, because..." He felt her free hand twist into the sheets. "...because the magic was coming to me so easily, so powerfully. I was in a complete trance until I came out of the tower. And the worst part is—" Allegra's breath hitched. "It felt good. It was wrong, I know, but it felt amazing. And that was just the one time. Isidora absorbed so much of it—Merlin, the power she must have had."
There was a soft, trance-like note of wonder in her voice. A dark note. One that didn't belong. Ominis frowned and pulled her closer to him, tracing her jaw to turn her head. "Don't think like that," he whispered. "You did what you had to do, and that's where it must stop."
