Aranshire was a nice-looking hamlet, Allegra decided, now that it was free of spiders.
She followed Nurse Blainey through the stone-paved streets, carrying a basket of the Healer's supplies. Warm air and bright sunlight shone on top of the forested hamlet, rustling the tree's leaves in a nostalgic, familiar sound. The tiny market was alive with shoppers and hawking vendors alike. There had barely been two stalls when Allegra had last been here. Driving away hordes of rabid, flesh-eating spiders really did wonders for business.
Nurse Blainey—Noreen, as she insisted on being called outside Hogwarts—led her to a large, airy house on the far end of the hamlet. She gave Allegra a hesitant smile as they stopped by the door.
"Here we are," she said. "Are you sure you really don't mind, dear?"
Allegra gave her a smile. "I should be asking you that, Nur—Miss Blainey." Her smile wavered, her gaze falling to the floor. "I know Ominis would've been better qualified."
Noreen laid gentle, practiced hands on her arms. "I'm sure it won't be too hard for you." Her voice was gentle, soothing. She tapped on the door. A green-clad man, tall and dark-haired, opened it for them, giving Nurse Blainey a broad grin.
"Noreen," he said. "How nice to see you."
Nurse Blainey smiled and suddenly started adjusting her hair. Allegra smirked, raising a brow. "Marcus. It's nice to see you, too. This is Miss Allegra Chant: she'll be helping us today. Miss Chant, may I introduce Marcus Pomfrey?"
Marcus stepped backward, leading them into a warm, musty interior. Faded yellow stone, old brown wood, and stained-glass windows made up the circular house. It smelled of old mint and dry flowers. As Marcus led them through the area, she passed several white-clothed patients, most of them aged or sickly. Allegra was suddenly reminded of Anne. Of Ominis. Fisting a hand into her skirts, she followed Nurse Blainey, looking forward to whatever tasks would keep her busy today.
"So is this your apprentice, Noreen?" Marcus-the-object-of-Nurse-Blainey's-affections asked, stopping in a tiny office. This small room held a single bed, a musty mirror, and piled-up Healer's clothes. A desk had been shoved into the corner. A towering pile of scrolls sat on its surface.
"Oh, no. Ominis is...indisposed, at the moment." Noreen caught Allegra's eye, both women sharing pained expressions. "But Allegra is a perfectly capable girl."
"Well, Miss Chant, you'll mostly be administering medicine today." Marcus took the basket from her. He opened its lid and examined the array of tiny potions inside. Allegra recognized Wiggenweld, her old friend, among them. Each bottle had labels stuck to its surface. "It'll be easy work. Each of our patients is wearing a name tag, so you can quickly find who needs what."
"Here, love, let's divide the pool," Nurse Blainey said. She and Allegra began taking potions from the basket, piling them into silver trays. Moments later, Allegra was being handed a white apron and a clean pair of gloves. Nurse Blainey helped her tie a green bandana into her hair, finishing it off with a ribbon at the base of her neck.
They both looked into the foggy mirror.
Allegra snickered. Noreen smiled, cupping a hand over her mouth.
"Go on, Nurse Blainey," Allegra teased. "I know it doesn't suit me."
"I wasn't going to say anything! You look wonderful, darling," Noreen said, her smile betraying her thoughts.
"Of course I look wonderful!" Allegra said with a laugh, adjusting the apron around her waist. "Just not in Healer colors!"
"Oh, stop," Noreen laughed.
