It was strange not to talk to Allegra.

For the rest of the week, the thick tension between them seemed to be at its highest. When he felt her presence come closer, an ache bloomed in Ominis' chest as soon as it moved away from him. He wanted to tell her all about how he'd become Nurse Blainey's assistant. He wanted to be holding her hand again, following her around the Halls as he'd done before.

But he was also still incredibly peeved. After all they'd done together, after the way she'd nearly died, Allegra was willing to do it all again for a bit of sport?

Today, he was in Professor Garlick's class. They were being taught how to properly trim Mallowsweet bushes with a pair of brittle silver scissors. As their Herbology teacher went on discussing why the plant needed the utmost maintenance and care, Ominis heard Sebastian say, "Ugh."

"What?" Ominis asked, feeling along the leaves of the plant in front of him.

"You won't like it," Sebastian drawled. "Amit's sliding up to your girl. Oh, damn, I've over-trimmed mine."

Amit? "What are they doing?" Ominis demanded.

"He's offering to carry the pot for her, looking all smiley," Sebastian drawled. "I don't know about this fight, Ominis. She's not wearing her choker today."

He felt his heart sting at that. Across the room, he heard Amit's voice rise above the chatter of the other students. To his sickening surprise, Allegra laughed.

"Curse these scissors," Sebastian spat. "Professor, can't I—?"

"These plants require delicate instruments, Mister Sallow!" Professor Garlick called. "Do try your best! Oh, excellent work, Everett. Five points to Ravenclaw. See, dears, this is how you do it..."

Ominis heard Amit whisper something. Allegra whispered back, sending them both snickering.

"I don't understand," Ominis hissed, giving the leaves in front of him a harsher snip than what was necessary. "What could that dolt be saying that's so bloody funny and so bloody interesting--"

"Mister Gaunt!" Professor Garlick cried. Ominis felt around his bush—he'd taken off an entire leaf. "Don't trim too much, dear. Do you need any help?"

"I'll manage, Professor," Ominis said through gritted teeth. He smelled a mix of flowery scents and felt a soft hand pat him on the shoulder as Professor Garlick went about the classroom.

As the class went on, he heard their Professor speak again. "Beautifully done, Miss Chant, Mister Thakkar! Five points to Gryffindor and Ravenclaw each."

Ominis felt the scissors in his hands break in his grip.

"Careful, Ominis," Sebastian teased. "You're turning a little green."

"Shut up," he spat.

"Never thought I'd see you jealous," Sebastian hummed.

"I'm not above stabbing you with these scissors, Sebastian, I swear it." He was feeling irritation prickling at the back of his head. Ominis dropped his scissors and sat back on his stool, impatiently drumming his fingers against the table. Curse these Mallowsweet leaves. Curse that Ravenclaw boy for making her laugh so delightedly.

And curse him for letting it go on for so long.

As soon as Professor Garlick dismissed the class, Ominis made a beeline for Allegra's presence. He got closer to the scent of clementines and reached out, closing a hand around her school robes.

"Ominis?" she said, surprised.

"Oh, hello!" Amit said cheerily.

"Hello," he nearly spat. He moved his hand to Allegra's wrist and forced a smile on his face. "If you'll excuse us."
