Salvation came in the form of the Ministry.
Two dozen Aurors snapped into the Hogwarts courtyard. Resplendent in black robes, the last of Ranrok's forces were quickly finished off, panicked at the sight of the Ministry's best fighters.
A small team of Healers arrived, too, bearing carts of potions and other supplies. They were met by a frantic Nurse Blainey, who directed them to the students who needed the most urgent care.
Natsai Onai called for her mother. In the distance, Professor Onai called back, arms outstretched as she ran for her daughter, for her brave little gazelle.
"Auntie," Garreth was groaning. "Stop it, I'm fine."
Matilda Weasley ran her fingers through Garreth's hair, through his cheeks, checking for injuries. Aside from a few bumps and scratches, he was left unscathed. The Weasleys shared a hug. Then Professor Weasley turned to her other Gryffindors, clucking over her disheveled- looking students.
On the other side of the room, Professor Dinah Hecat was laying on a makeshift bed, surrounded by a gaggle of her Ravenclaws. They gushed about how amazing she'd been. A small smile crossed the Professor's face.
"Alright, my flowers," Professor Garlick was calling, each arm holding a young Hufflepuff. "Go on and help where you can, do you hear? Whatever they need." She threw her arms around a disheveled Adelaide Oakes, loudly proclaiming how proud she was of her.
Imelda Reyes and Everett Clopton, slumped against a bench, received a hug from Madame Kogawa. "The way you two flew!" the teacher said happily, "Oh, I'm so proud!"
In the distance, Professor Sharp was sending Slytherin students to hand out batches of still- warm Wiggenweld. "Well done, all of you," he said, patting each on the back. He locked eyes with a Slytherin girl resting on a blanket. It was the student who first rose to defend her school. He gave her a small bow of respect, and the girl beamed.
And finally...
A ragged form dragged itself to the Great Hall. There was a wave of shock that ran along the room as Ominis Gaunt appeared, limping and levitating something behind him: Professor Fig and Allegra Chant. Murmurs of shock rose along the room as they saw the girl's blood- covered body.
Professor Sharp ran to the boy, checking him over for injuries. Gaunt, silent and stiff, pushed his hands away.
"I'm fine," the boy was saying numbly. "Sir, Sebastian...he's still down there."
Professor Sharp yelled for a pair of Slytherin students to go down to the Keeper's Caverns and search for the Sallow boy. As Aesop Sharp looked Ominis over, all he could see in the boy's eyes was a pure, unbridled, shock.
