Hogwarts' table burst into cheers at the sound of Sebastian's name. His own ears were ringing: he'd been chosen. The Goblet had chosen him.
Had it really just chosen him?
"Go on, Sebastian!" Allegra was saying excitedly, clapping her hands with the rest. Her voice and the nudge Ominis gave him snapped him out of his reverie. "Get up there!"
He rose from his seat and began numbly walking down the Great Hall, listening to his Professors clap for him. Beauxbatons and Durmstrang offered him polite cheers as well. As Sebastian made his way toward the Goblet of Fire and the stage behind it, he felt drawn in by its brilliant blue light. He stepped onto the stage. Sebastian stood beside Hugo Bellerose, who was giving him a wide smile, and Dorothea Jager. The Durmstrang girl had warm brown skin and curly hair cut short. Needle-shaped earrings hung from her ears. When their eyes met, she frowned and moved her gaze away.
"Ladies and gentlemen!" Luxetongue called, waving excitedly. "May I present: our Triwizard Tournament Champions of 1891!"
The Great Hall exploded in a cheer. Out of the corner of his eye, Sebastian could see Garreth Weasley standing on the Hogwarts table, cheering loudly and calling his name. Allegra had risen to her feet. Ominis was clapping, too, a smile curling on his lips.
Despite himself, Sebastian smiled. He took a look at Hugo. The Beauxbatons boy gave him a smile. Further to the left, Dorothea had settled her expression into a proud smirk.
There it was again: the call of a challenge, the promise of mischief. He had been chosen to represent Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament. Him, Sebastian Sallow.
Well, it had chosen bloody damn well.
So when Mr. Moon rolled up a camera, Sebastian gave the papers his biggest, brightest, smile.
"Well done, Sebastian!"
"I always thought Hogwarts' champion should be a Slytherin!"
Words of encouragement and applause surrounded Sebastian as he left the Great Hall with the Professors, Headmasters, and Mr. Luxetongue. Sebastian caught Allegra's eye and gave her a wave: she waved back, smiling brightly.
"Congratulations, Monsieur Sallow," Hugo said as they walked, "it is good to be competing alongside a new friend. And to you as well, Mademoiselle Jager."
"Yes, congratulations," Dorothea said coolly. She sped up and walked ahead, catching up to the adults. Sebastian and Hugo exchanged glances. Not so friendly, that one, but Bellerose only shrugged and smiled.
They were led into Phineas Black's office, where a neat row of chairs had been set up. The three Headmasters took their places at the front of the room. Mister Luxetongue, smiling brightly, turned to address the three Champions.
"I'd like to start by congratulating you all," said John Luxetongue. "It's a great honor to be chosen by the Goblet of Fire."
The three champions murmured their thanks.
"Now, then," Luxetongue went on. "I should remind you that, as the chosen Champions, your names are now bound by a magical contract that cannot be broken." He fixed them with a serious look. "You will see this competition through."
Sebastian's brows shot up. Beside him, Hugo swallowed nervously.
"Alright! Now, let's go over the schedule. The first task shall begin on the 25th of November; you will have roughly a month to prepare. Of course, we will be holding the Yule Ball after that, exactly on Christmas Day. That'll be an exciting event, hmm? A nice, formal dance."
