The cottage in Keensbridge was silent, sitting frozen and cold on its patch of land.

Outside, a silver-haired Professor was murmuring soft incantations as she paced around the property. Her student tailed her. With a gesture, the student joined her, murmuring the unfamiliar incantation as they both paced around the property. A final wave of their wands sent a shimmering shield falling over the property.

The student, a younger girl with yellow-red hair, moved to give her Professor's hand a squeeze. The old woman nodded and patted her hand. She murmured something that made them both turn to the backyard. There, two boys were moving their wands to make room for an impossibly small grave.

Inside, the cottage seemed to have been frozen after last night's events. There were still trunks in the hallway. In the living room, a terrarium held a sleeping white snake. The kitchen table had scattered mugs and plates that had yet to be cleared, remnants of last night's meal. An upright piano stood just beside the table. Its front was opened, a series of tools resting by its feet. It looked like it was supposed to be a good night.

But it hadn't been.

The sound of moving earth was grating in Ominis' ears. He was standing, numb, beside Sebastian as they both levitated patches of dirt away from the ground. Ominis didn't know how long they'd been doing it for. He didn't really care. Ever since he'd woken up from his restless sleep, Ominis had been halfway dazed.

She was gone. Plums was gone, sent to her grave by the family she'd served for generations and generations. Not even the comfort of Allegra's touch and whispered words could make him feel any better.

"That should be enough," Sebastian said quietly. Somewhere behind them, the cottage door creaked open. "Hello. Professor Hecat gone yet?"

"She's just left," Allegra called. "The enchantment will tide us over until my parents can set something a little more permanent. And..." She shuffled as she adjusted something in her arms. "...here she is."

Ominis reached for her, one arm resting around her waist as the other grazed the cloth-wrapped bundle in her arms.

"Together, now."

They gently levitated Plums' body into her grave. Moments later, three bedraggled figures began moving the earth back into place, layer by layer.

"I'm sorry, Ominis," Sebastian whispered. He braced an arm around Ominis' shoulders. A soft touch, Allegra's, settled on his chest. Sebastian sighed. "Merlin. We go to a lot of these, don't we?"

"Ominis?" Allegra murmured. Her hand rested on his cheek. "Do you need a moment?"

He could only manage to give her a stiff nod. Allegra pressed a gentle kiss to his cheek.

Allegra and Sebastian left, their footsteps thudding against the wooden floors of the cottage. Ominis tuned out the murmured sounds of their conversation. He felt along the new, upturned earth of her grave with his hand. She deserved a marker. Something.

He should have been there.

He should have taken Lysandra home. He should have done something. Maybe if he had, he could have spared Plums her fate.

His wand had told him that her frail little body had been subjected to Crucio before she died. He didn't want to imagine how long she'd been tortured for. The thought of stick-thin Plums twisting and writhing and screaming under the Cruciatus curse drove dark, angry thoughts to the front of his mind.

But they didn't surprise him anymore.

"Thank you, Plums," Ominis murmured. "You were the best of us all."
