    "Mommy."

I twisted, pulling the cover up to my chin. Somewhere the breeze of the cold air was rushing in through the window, causing me to sink further under the covers. Jeez, this was soft, a slice of a heavenly cloud engulfing me. Warmth from Maddox's body drifted towards me, making me realize how hot he runs in his sleep. Like a sauna. Still, it was the most soothing feeling to wake up too, not always have I woken up to heat, and I inhaled his fresh scent along with it. A lazy smile overtook my face as I pulled my hand to find his body next to mine.

    "Mommy."

This time, Jax's horse voice clicked in my head, and I fell out of the daze state I was in, sitting upward, causing Maddox to stir, but not wake. This is the second night I don't remember waking up throughout the night. The second night by Maddox's side where I've felt so safe I've slept through the entire night. The feeling is very foreign to me, because I've spent my entire life jerking away to check that the door to my bedroom is closed, even after I left my mother's house. It's a habit I can't kick. At one point, when I lived with my mother, I woke up to the door of my bedroom fully opened and one of my mother's buddies knocked out in the bed with me. I've never felt safe after that, not with anyone, and definitely not with them in my bed. Expect for Maddox, it seems.

The covers pooled around my waist, and the previous soothing air now nipped at my bare arms. Turning, I searched for where Jax's voice came from and found him, once again, in our bedroom. I know for a fact I put him to sleep in the second bedroom. I'm still trying to teach him to sleep in his own room, and just because we're on a weekend getaway doesn't mean I want to bend the rules. I was trying to establish consistency. Everything I read told me that was the key to disciplining children. But somewhere during the night his entire crib was transported here, or more exactly, it was placed right beside Maddox. And the culprit of the move was sleeping soundly, stretched out on his stomach beside me. His arm dangled over the side of the bed as if at some point it was laying in the crib and had slipped out.

Again, he took care of Jax during the night and let me sleep.

But now that the sun was out, Jax was standing up to his feet and raising his arms up, indicating he wanted out of the crib. I glanced at the clock while I slipped out carefully from under the thin cover, noting that it was six am. I was a morning person, so this wake up was completely fine, but I know Maddox is more of an eleven am kind of guy. Up on my feet, I fixed my nightgown before walking over to Jax, who had much more color in his skin today. "How you are feeling, kiddo?" I whispered, not wanting Maddox to wake yet. Not only because of the state in which he'll get up, but because resting was scarce for Maddox, and he needed it. I'm sure he was up every few hours with Jax.

Ash's race wasn't until two pm, so we had plenty of time. Jax swiped his hand across is forehead, moving away the hair he wouldn't let me cut, and responded tiredly, "I food?"
