Mackenzie's POV
"UMM about new year's night..." I said and waited not knowing how to continue but he knew how to end it when he spoke
"Forget about everything that happened" he said it with no sentiment. I know he has always been indifferent but he could have spared my heart
"Oh" I said with defeat. Now I wish I could learn how to show no emotion like he does in moments like this. I'm sure he has dealt with many women who always acted clingy with him and I didn't want to look like one of them so I took another breath and nodded with a tight smile
"What do you feel for?" He asked and I looked at him. I'm certain he could tell the confusion on my face when he elaborated "I'll cook us something for dinner"
"Everything is fine by me" I said to him. I know I ate at Jay's but I made sure to save enough space in my tummy for his food. He always saved leftovers for me but I didn't expect to have him cooking fresh meals for me tonight.
He was still rooted in his spot and I gave him a questioning gaze
"You can come and watch me cook" he mumbled and walked into the kitchen. I smiled and dropped my school bag on the couch to follow him.
The last time I watched him cook, it was fun. We spoke a lot...okay I spoke a lot but he did listen because he would ask questions when he was confused. If he was asking me to join him again, then it means he enjoyed last time too
Right?
I sat on one of the stools behind the counter and watched him pick ingredients from the fridge and cabinets. I tried to guess what he would prepare but I think it was going to be an Italian dish because I wasn't familiar with the process when he started cooking. I didn't mind because everything he cooked was delicious. I looked at him for awhile before something struck into my head
"Mr Moretti" I called out and he turned to look at me
"Just call me Dante" he said and I swallowed hard remembering the first time I called him by his first name.
It was that night he just asked me to forget
Perhaps he remembered it too, perhaps he didn't. Because one second, he had a hungry look on his face and the next second, he was as expressionless as ever. I wetted my dry lips and blinked rapidly before speaking again
"Dante..." I said trying not to make it sound too sensual like it did that night "Uhh about my job, can you..."
"I already made it clear that you aren't getting it back" he raised a brow
"Yes you did say it but can you at least reconsider?" I could hear the plea in my tone
"No" he answered without a second thought. I sighed heavily and ruffled my messy bun "I was never letting you get that job back"
"How about you help me and I also do something for you in return" I suggested
"What can you do for me" I know it wasn't even a question because we both knew there was nothing I could do for him. He had everything "You aren't getting that job or any other job"
"Why?"
"That restaurant belongs to my mom. What would she say if she finds out about you working there? And it's a matter of time before someone discovers that you're my wife. Questions would be raised if they know the wife of a famous multimillionaire works at a restaurant or a coffee shop for a living" Now that he was saying it, everything made sense
But I barely had half of my fees and school resumes next week. Asking Jay for help is not an option too. I knew he'd be happy to help me but I couldn't bring myself to do that
