17: CONTRACT WIFE

Mackenzie's POV

"DID you hear?!" I had to retract the phone from my ear in annoyance

"If you don't stop screaming in my ear every time you call, then I would be deaf before I turn thirty" I've heard many people call me giddy but it's surely because they hadn't met Jay yet. He was always hearing something and it didn't matter to him if we were at work or not he'd call to inform me

I couldn't tell him I wasn't interested because he'd fly into rage so I pretended to listen every time

"What is it again, J?" I groaned

"You seriously don't know? He's your husband and you don't know!" He howled at me

"My husband? What happened to him?" my heart sank when he said that

"You sound frantic Kenz. Don't tell me you're worried about someone you barely like" he teased

"I'm human! It's normal for me to get worried and not because I like him" I spewed and wondered if I was telling him or myself

"I didn't even say you like him" he laughed and I groaned loudly "Then I'll only tell you that he's good and nothing's wrong with him. Does that drain your worry now? If it does, then I'm hanging up"

"Just tell me everything already" I rushed before he could hung up and he only laughed at the other end

"Just admit that you're starting to like him" he stated and I didn't respond "Okay I won't force you. But it was announced now that he's the new CEO of the Black Investment and Manufacturing Corporation! Can you believe that? He's so young and he's achieved so much already" he gushed and I found myself smiling

Was this what he meant when he said he was almost there on Christmas?

He said he was going to make the company his. So does that mean he wanted to be the CEO and then take after his dad's company completely seeing that his dad is too ill to run the business? I felt bad knowing he didn't have a good relationship with his father while I'd kill to have my dad in my life.

Life is so unfair

After we had returned to his house from his mom's, he ignored me like he did when we were in the car. He had gone to his study room and I also went to get some sleep but I couldn't get a peaceful one because I was worried he might do something irrational in his study room

I'm only worried because I'm human and not because I like him

"Hellooo are you listening to me?" Jay's voice broke my train of thoughts

"Yeah I am"

"Then why are you still not moving?"

"Move? Where to?" I asked

"Jeez I just told you your husband got elected as CEO so don't you think stopping by his office to congratulate him would make him feel good?" I couldn't see him but I could bet he was wiggling his eyebrows

"I don't think so. Do you think that'll be okay?" I asked contemplating the possibilities

"I'm sure he's going to be thrilled with your visit. You get off at three on Wednesdays right? So go now" he instructed and I took my lab coat off. I waved at Ava and grabbed my school bag, running outside to catch a bus

I got to his office exactly the same time he came out of the building but he wasn't alone. I watched as they both walked to his car and I saw how exasperated he looked. She touched him and I frowned when he didn't pull away. She spoke gently to him and I finally decided I'd witnessed enough so I walked to them
