It shouldn't have hurt me, but it did. I couldn't understand why a single word of disappointment or a minor misstep from him could ruin my entire day. I ignored his calls, initially due to circumstances - I was busy with attendance or in class - but later, he stopped trying. Perhaps if he had persisted, I would have answered.
I wondered if this was what marriage felt like. That morning, he was in a good mood, while I wasn't, but I didn't snap at him. I distinctly remember handling only two envelopes; I hadn't misplaced one.
But could I convince him of that? His behavior was erratic - one moment he was fine, and the next, a minor hiccup would trigger extreme rudeness. Our situation was already challenging, and his behavior didn't make it easier.
Just a few weeks ago, we had reconciled, but now I didn't know how many more days it would take for him to normalize. Last time, it wasn't his fault, but did that matter? We were both suffering;
I was, at least. Maybe the toxic relationship I witnessed between my parents had left an indelible mark on my mind. Whenever Vaibhav and I disagreed, I felt our relationship crumbling, like everything we had built over months was disintegrating.
With all that, my mother-in-law arrived on the scene. Whenever she made a comment, I felt the urge to retort, ''You should sometimes ask your son about his misjudgments regarding me, just as you question me.''
I wanted to tell her that he's an adult, capable of handling his own affairs, and that she shouldn't interfere in our relationship. But, of course, it wasn't that simple.
In the morning, despite not having slept well, I made idlis, his favorite South Indian dish, hoping to make a gesture of goodwill. However, it seemed to go unnoticed by him. As he was leaving, his mother glanced at me disapprovingly while I was having breakfast.
Was I expected to abandon my meal just because he wasn't eating? The moment he left, her gaze fell upon me, as if I had committed a crime by having breakfast. I felt uncomfortable, so I quickly rose and left the table.
He departed without even sparing a glance in my direction, a stark contrast to our usual mornings when he would drop me off at college. Today, he seemed indifferent, leaving me feeling hurt and confused.
VAIBHAV
''Where is Nidhi?'' I asked, taking a glass.
''In her room, bhaiya,'' she replied, before leaving.
I drank the whole glass of water in one go, and drew air out of my mouth.
Aadarsh chuckled, as I gave him a shooting glare he burst into laugh.
"It's so great to see, a very silent and nice woman can make you this nervous," he spoke, and threw his head back and laughed yet again
"Why did you fight?" He asked, I wondered, how does he always know that something is off between us.
"How do you know?" I asked, and he laughed yet again, I rolled my fist and gave him a nice whack on his back. He winced in pain, like, I have slapped him with an iron in my fist, like I didn't know how much of a perfect actor he is.
