Beneath this onyx sky,
I sway in my ideation,
my gaze fixed on the boundless sea of radiant stars.
Millions upon millions,
with plenty more humming
in the beyond.
An entire universe to admire.
Then, back to me—
a meager mortal,
wrapped in the arms of natural simplicity.
No slain divinity.
No mountains nudged.
In this grand scheme,
I rival the feeble pebble.
But I do wonder,
in this curious mind of mine,
if this reality is the only one allowed,
if my path may claim the courage to curve,
delivering me to a higher purpose.
More than grassy hills.
More than placid lakes.
With these frail wings,
I could soar to places unimaginable.
Maybe,
just maybe,
I may become more
than what I am.

"Lyla!" her mother hollered. "Lyla!"
Just like that, the woman and infant drowned in the crowd.
The little girl was all alone,
frozen in place, devoured by the scarlet-soaked horror.
She mustered a single question.
Why?
Her gaze swiveled to the blackened skies, but her answer would never come.
The cosmic souls had long since shut their hearts.
A duo of forces, both grand enough to rival planets, basking in galaxy-shattering ferocity.
