Chapter Ten

"It's kind of peaceful down here, isn't it?" I glanced over at Leo as we sat on opposite sides of the pod, now sitting on the ocean floor. We'd been down here for hours, according to Leo, but I'd only woken up an hour ago, having hit my head when we were falling and blacked out.

"In a depressing way." Leo nodded in agreement as Jemma began to stir from her own sleep. "You looked very peaceful sleeping. Didn't want to wake you, but I'm glad that you're up."

"What's happening?" Jemma asked as she sat up and looked around our small pod.

"Nic and I've spent the last hour trying to figure out why we sank." Leo told her. "We're at the bottom of the ocean, in case you missed that bit. These pods are built to be compatible with all SHIELD aircraft, submarines, spacecraft. On impact, the atmospheric adaptation must have tried to compensate. We slowly sank as it increased the density of the outer walls. I measured the rate the water rose on the glass. Did the math we're at least ninety feet down. You can't see the surface."

"How did we survive the fall?" Jemma asked the same question I had earlier.

"The plane must have been in vertical flight mode, flying low." I recalled the answer Leo had given me.

"I managed to strap us to one of the backboards before we hit." Leo added. "And I broke my arm, same two places I broke it in second grade which is strange."

"I thought we were dead for sure, Fitz." Jemma chuckled, earning a raised brow from me. "We're so lucky. Now we just need to figure a way out of here. We'll find a way out of here, right?"

"And then we'd be in the middle of the ocean with the bends and no floatation and no one looking for us." I commented, staring up at the ceiling. My head was pounding from where I had hit it and my shoulder was still hurting as well. Leo had taken the knife out of it before I woke up and bandaged it, but it still hurt, as did my wrist. My guess was that I hit it or something during the impact.

"I already spent an hour trying to rig the wireless signals on the EKG to send out a weak distress call before remembering that it's a SHIELD frequency and no one's listening." Leo nodded over at the EKG machine. "And that's not the problem the problem is that there aren't many supplies left in here, - so I've already done the math -"

"Enough with the math." Jemma cut him off. "What are you saying?"

"There is no way out." I answered for Leo, causing them both to look at me. "We're going to die down here."

"Can't your do something, with your powers?" Jemma asked me, a hopeful look in her eyes. "Couldn't you control the water so we can get to the top? Or create air bubbles around our heads so we can swim to the top?"

"Do I look like Cedric Diggory?" I rolled my eyes. "Besides, even if that were possible it still wouldn't matter. Ward shot me up with some sort of drug after he stabbed me. My powers aren't working and I don't know when they will again. It could be hours, days, maybe even week. We don't have that kind of time."

"Are you scared?" Jemma asked us as she looked out the window at the water.

"Yeah." Leo nodded, he almost sounded lost now, in his own little world. "And I'm hungry, too."

"Me too scared and hungry." Jemma agreed. "What do you think it's like?"

"Death?" Leo asked.

"Speaking from experience, it isn't too bad. Can be a bit painful, and you get scared right as it's ending. You almost start to panic, not wanting to die, but then you almost seem to accept it." I thought back to New York. I could still see Stark, Steve, and Barton's worried expressions as I bled to death on the street. Could still feel Barton and Stark's hands as they tried in vain to stop the bleeding. Could still hear Stark yelling at me, refusing to accept the fact that I was going to die. It all felt as if it had happened just yesterday instead of two years ago. "Of course, I did end up coming back to life less than a day after. So I might not be the best person to ask."
