"Hey Traci, Tri Tri, Toni and Wanda." I follow behind as my mum greets all the sisters, she kisses the air above them then walks to her seat.
They all look at me so I go and greet them all. Once I take my seat next to my mum, Trina leans in and goes right in.
"So, Tamar at the Bar Chix party, you mentioned how Tiana had..."
Towanda cuts her off, "How Tiana came into your life two weeks ago."
Toni then adds, "Yeah Tamar, you didn't mention any of that to us." Toni being the sophisticated person that she is pats her mouth with a napkin.
Traci then adds as she leans in, "Yeah, why didn't you tell us?"
It's been about two days since the party and I know that my aunts have tons of questions which I am not ready for her. I watch as everyone orders their standard cocktails while I settle for water since I'm underage.
I decided to wear a simple black dress with some black louboutins which I have never owned but my mum took it upon herself to order for me.
"She's my daughter." Tamar answers and I slouch back in my chair.
"We are family, Tamar." Toni gives us both a look. "If our niece had come back into your life then we had the right to know, you should not have kept this quiet."
"I just got her back." My mum responds as she takes a sip of her cocktail. "I needed my time to bond with her because I don't know... maybe it's because I haven't seen my daughter in almost TEN YEARS!"
I feel my eyes water at this.
"There's no need to shout." Trina says and I furrow my brows at her. Why does Trina have that Canadian accent when she's talking?
"Then stop asking me about it." I can tell that my mum is getting agitated because she is being very expressive with her hands and she's kind of rocking back and forth.
Everyone goes silent and I honestly feel a mix of emotions. This isn't the happy reunion that I was expecting, I just feel weird because I don't really know these women anymore.
Towanda looks right at me, "Where have you been this whole time?"
Way to put me on the spot.
I clear my throat as I prepare to answer the question but I am not all comfortable with this.
"My da- That man took me away." I fight back the urge to cry. "I never wanted to leave so don't think that I voluntarily left with him. I never really knew where I was until I hit my teens and that's when I realised that we were in the UK. I did try to call you but he found out and yeah..."
I chew on the inside of my cheeks as they all react to my words.
"Did he hit you?" Toni quietly asks and I sharply inhale at her words. Everyone puts down their drinks and I feel the tears slowly roll down my face.
I look directly into Toni's eyes, "If he hit my mum, what did you expect would happen to me?"
I never told anyone about this so this was very shocking to my family here. My mum covers her mouth while looking at me and I spot the tears falling from her eyes before she runs off.
Traci pulls me close and embraces me which makes me tear up even more but I'm strong now. I have lived to tell the tale so there is no need to cry any longer.
"It's ok." I rub Traci's back. "I'm fine now."
Not wanting to see the pity look on their faces, I stand to my feet and I follow in the direction that my mum went in. Once I leave the restaurant, I spot her crying while on the phone.
She looks up and sees me, "Vince, I'll call you back."
I watch as she wipes away her tears after she hangs up the phone, "I'm so sorry. I'm sorry that you were put in a position and I'm sorry that I couldn't protect you."
I pull her into a hug and we just stay silent while wrapped up in eachothers arms.
"I still look beat when I cry." I turn to see her looking at herself in the rearview mirror.
I laugh she starts re-arranging her wig.
"I'm strong mum." I tell her. "I just want to let you know that is was never and it never will be your fault."
She pauses for a moment before looking me in the eyes.
"He was stupid as hell. He had the best people in his life and he really let them go." Her voice cracks. "I'm just happy that I have my beautiful seventeen year old daughter back. I have my Teddy Rubskins and my scrumptious baby Logan. "
"Girl, he was stupid. He had the best people in his life and he let them go. I'm happy because now I have my Teddy Rubskins and my scrumptious baby Logan. I also have my GAWJUS 17 year old. What more can I ask for?"
After a few minutes away from the cameras, we decide to head inside and surprisingly Toni has already ordered.
"Toni, you ordered." My mum raises her eyebrow as she takes a seat.
The rest of the lunch went great and I really enjoyed being with my aunts and just catching up on everything that I've missed out on.
God is Good.
All the Time.
He gave me my mother back and for that I am ever so grateful.
