Queen Celeste's POV:

Several hours of sweating, screaming and eventual pushing later, my babe was born. I lay my head back, exhausted. I had been notified that the King did receive my message but there was no response. He did not show.

Not a soul could say as to where he was.

Turning from the window witch I had glanced at often in my labors, hoping to see him arrive, I turn my attention now to the sound of crying.

"Congratulations. You have a healthy daughter, Your Majesty."

A daughter?

But... I thought....

I smile through tears knowing how much King Shane desires a son.

A son to inherit his throne and dragon rider blood.

To pass on both legacies.

I take my daughter in my arms, rocking her gently.

An hour later she falls asleep.

I too drift off, feeling the babe being gently removed from my arms.

I wake to the sounds of footsteps approaching my chambers.

The door opens and King Shane makes his way in, smiling joyfully.

I open my eyes, giving him a respectful nod.

"We have a daughter, Majesty." I tell him

His face falls.

I gesture towards the crib where she rests.

"Will you hold her?" I ask

Without a word he turns and walks away.

My heart breaks.

I awaken again a few hours later to the baby crying.

Hearing her, one of the midwives enters my chambers.

I open my eyes, sitting up, I hold up a hand.

"It's quite alright. I've got her." I whisper

"You should be resting, my Queen." She replies gently

I smile, holding out my arms.

She walks over to the crib, gently bobbing the babe up and down as she makes her way over, placing the little girl in my arms. I place a kiss upon the fussy girl's head, rocking her gently back and forth.

"Send for the wet nurse please. Is there any word from the King?" I ask

The older woman smiles down at us.

"I shall send for her immediately, Your Majesty. There has been no sign of His Majesty since his earlier visit."

I nod, taking this in as I stare down at my little girl.

I blink back tears as I soothe my newborn.

It's okay darling.

I shall always love you.

Always.
