Seven Months Later:
King Shane's POV:
I sit inside the castle at the table, listening to the Lords drown in as they had for hours from topics to damages in need of repair to the prisoners awaiting trial or execution. It was no surprise the dungeon was full. The kingdom was going through a terrible drought, causing crops to die off. Using large buckets, dragons flew out to sea to gather water or fish. This would not be enough to keep people from dying of starvation. Hearing myself being called to, I tune back in to the conversation at the table.
"There is of course, one last matter that must be discussed." Lord Ivan says
"Speak it so we may go about the day, Lord Ivan."
"That would be the line of succession."
I tap the table, feeling my annoyance grow at the mention of it.
Ever since I'd rewed it was a topic often discussed, often to an annoying degree. While my family members or fellow royals boasted about their growing line, mine remained halted at one, my daughter. Queen Celeste and I spent many nights entangled with one another.
Still, no babe.
It is only a matter of time.
These things can take a while.
My mind drifts to the thought of Celeste with our future heirs.
Although young herself, she is excellent with Ruby.
She is kind and gives care to her goals and education.
The lords exchange looks.
"What?" I demand
All look away.
"The world has not always been kind to me. Rest assured gentlemen, I already have plans to leave court for a week, taking Celeste with me. By the time we return, there will be a babe in the Queen's belly."
Lord Miles opens his mouth to speak but I hold up a hand.
"Not another word of this. Bring it up again and heads will roll. I will do my duty without the pressure of lesser men upon me." I stand and exit
Queen Celeste's POV:
Sitting in the field, I watch as Princess Ruby gathers flowers. Running up to me, she grins, handing me the bundle of purple, red and blue flowers. I thank her and she takes off again. Hearing hooves, I turn to see King Shane among with a group of knights atop horses. He pulls the reigns, slowing his steed to a stop before hopping off. I stand, curtsying. Princess Ruby makes her way over and does the same, our eyes cast downward as he approaches.
"My darlings." He greets
"Your Majesty." We reply
Princess holds her second bundle of flowers up to her father.
"We're gathering flowers for our quarters." Princess Ruby tells him
"That is a wonderful idea. Be on your way darling. I must speak to your mother."
She curtsies again before taking off to find more flowers.
I turn my attention to my husband.
He takes my hand in his own.
"I know I have been busy but I hope you both are fairing well."
"You have been more than generous, Your Majesty. She is thriving, as am I."
"That is excellent. Is there any sign you are with child?"
"No, Your Majesty."
He takes a step back, letting my hand fall.
I feel a bit hurt but keep quiet.
"I must go."
I turn around and he places a quick kiss upon my cheek before walking back to his horse. Knowing there is nothing I can say, I sigh and turn back to Ruby. I know as his new wife it is my duty to provide a child. A son to take on his name, his legacy and throne. We had been apart quite often as of late, his duties taking him away from me and Ruby. Our relationship has become more strained as time passed and I was still without child.
I only hope time brings peace to us both.
