After about 20 minutes of Chuck trying to guess what my name could be, he finally had to return to his job as a 'slopper'. I perched myself down on a log, staring at my shoes. That soon got boring, so I walked off to find something to do.
I was thinking of hanging out with Newt, but as I was making my way to him, he had his tongue stuck out, desperately trying to pull out a difficult, stubborn weed. I thought best not to make him lose his concentration and instead, stumbled away and thought of the only other person to disturb whilst they worked, not particularly wanting to observe Winston's job.
I made my way around the glade, before finding the group of builders, working on something up against a tree. Most of the group was just chatting, so I thought they wouldn't mind if I joined.
"Hi Gally!" I said, my bubbly personality bursting through. "Hm? What do you want?" My smile fell instantly. I tried again, dismissing his words as impulse or something. "What are you doing?" I perched next to him, watching the intricate way he was hammering nails into a small crate. The rest of the builder's conversations were stopping, so they could watch our encounter.
I heard one of them quietly release a tease, "Ooh Gally's got a girlfriend, maybe he'll go soft" which encouraged others to laugh and quietly ridicule him. "Nothing. Do you want something or not?" I looked around, embarrassed. "Uhm I just wanted to see what you were doing." I said, just loud enough for them all to hear.
"Well can you not? We're trying to shucking work so piss off. Go annoy someone else you dumb shank." I didn't know what shank meant but I knew it wasn't good. I felt my throat bubble and water attempting to reach my eyes, my previous opinion of him shattered as quick as it had formed.
I wasn't even that bothered by his words, more by the fact that I had just been humiliated. On my very first day. In a new place. Being the only girl in a group of 50 boys.
I refused to let them see me cry. My emotions warped into anger.
What's his problem?
"Alright then dickweed, it's not my fault someone shoved a stick up your ass, but you should be nicer to people." I spat, scoffing as I walked away.
I heard his builders erupt with laugher behind me, Gally instantly shutting them up. I walked through a forest, finally feeling like I was far enough away from everyone.
I let the tears fall. All the ones built up from when I first got here. A mixture of fear and sadness, wondering if all of my encounters would go as the rest, wishing there was another girl who I could be with, who could understand how it feels to be alone with 50 horny, moody teenage boys.
I wiped my eyes, but still felt my anger lodged inside my gut. I picked up a stick and started attacking a tree with it, yelling with each hard blow.
CRACK
Suddenly I hear a twig snap behind me. I drop the stick and turn around, swiftly tucking my long hair behind my ear, pieces still sticking out. A boy stands there, backpack secured around his chest, his dark hair blowing softly in the cool breeze.
"Hi, uhm, I'm Minho..." He says, his arms falling to his sides as he notices me calm down.
"Hi" I reply quietly. "Sorry you had to see that..." I look at the stick, now blending in with the rough floor. "That's alright, I think the tree deserves more of an apology than I do, it looks pretty beat up." This coerces a small laugh from me, noticing the many scratches that now lace the tree's bark.
"Rough day?" He queries. I nod. "Well whenever I have a tough day, I run. Wanna give it a try?" I smile softly and agree, he warns me that he won't go easy on me, which I say isn't fair as he's a runner, meaning running is literally his daily job, and I don't remember how fast I can run. He laughs off my attempts at trying to get him to let me win and we agree that he can run as fast as he wants.
We settle on the box that I arrived in as being our ending point, it just being visible from the outskirts of the large forest. People notice us creating a line and stretching, recognising a race, and begin to gather along the course, most making their way to the finish area.
I even spotted a few boys placing bets, all against me winning. I scoff at their arrogance and certainty.
I briskly pull my hair into a high ponytail, keeping it out of my way for when I run, and securing it with a small hair elastic that had somehow made its way onto my wrist.
"Ready?" Minho asks, I nod with determination, and he begins to count down.
"Three" I take my position, tucking my elbows close to my chest and slowing my breathing.
"Two" I glare at him, the corners of my lips pursing into a menacing grin.
"One" I push from the ground, staying right beside Minho as we run.
I hear the boys behind us yelling, a mixture of 'Go Minho's!' and 'Go Greenie's!'.
I slice through the air, pushing past the panting boy next to me. As the finish line veers into sight, I can hear Minho coming up on my tail, his breath almost hitting my tensed neck.
I use my last bit of energy to send me across, smiling uncontrollably and yelling a loud "YES!".
Unfortunately, my recent victory led me to be unaware of the deep box, that of which was coincidentally our finish line. I fell rapidly, landing head-first.
My vision dazed in and out of consciousness. I could barely make out the worried silhouettes of Minho, Newt and Chuck as they hopped down beside me. I heard one of them declare "get her to the med-jacks" before finally dropping off into the peaceful bliss of sleep.
