The first thing I noticed before I lifted my eyelids with the sun shining through the window was a dry mouth and the space Steve had created on the bed. I moved my arm aimlessly across the empty sheets, somewhere between sleep and wakefulness. But the only thing that proved Steve was here last night was that the sheets were still a little wrinkled.
After staring at the ceiling for a while, thinking that maybe he had gone to the bathroom or done something else, I reached for my phone to check the time. Until I found a message there from my boyfriend.
Steve: I'm sorry I had to leave early, I didn't mean to wake you up. I got a call from Darby, he said some paperwork was missing. I'm going to the office. Call me in the evening.
Damn. Darby was the boss of the law firm where Steve and I interned. It's true that he's a moody, grumpy bastard, but I never thought he'd wake Steve up at the crack of dawn and call him into the office for fucking paperwork. Apart from that, when I thought about what happened last night, an unsettling thought entered my mind.
Is all this because of me? Did he run away without warning last night because I disappointed him? It couldn't be like this, could it? Steve wasn't like that.
I got out of bed without any sound around. I put my feet up on the floor, I had to pee, and to do that, the guest room in this wealthy house had an en-suite bathroom. But before I could get there, my phone vibrated once again. My sister was calling. What?
"Hi Sam," I answered the call. "Why are you calling me from down the hall?"
"I'm not at home, idiot!" I turned up my nose at Sam's surprisingly lively morning voice. "I left early in the morning for my yoga class. The stupid maid wasn't answering the phone, she must be in the kitchen somewhere or something. Listen, can you go to Matt's room and wake him up?"
Because there was so much information coming in at once, it took a while for my sleepy mind to process it all at once. Wait, did she say Matt's room?
"I don't understand, what exactly do you want me to do?"
"Wake him up and make him look at his phone. I remembered I have to go to a camping trip today with my yoga class. Matt doesn't know about it and I won't be around for about a week. So I have to let him know before he freaks out."
He will definitely freak out. But I do it more. I put my hand over the bridge of my nose and sighed, closing my eyes. I was about to ask her what she meant by 'Matt's room', but Sam thanked me and hung up.
In great despair, after peeing, I opened the door and walked out into the quiet hallway. I walked towards Sam and Matt's bedroom. The maid was indeed nowhere to be seen, and my steps nearly recoiled as I drew nearer and nearer. But I finally did it, stood at the door of the room at the end of the corridor and slowly brought the knocker down. When I poked my cowardly head through the door, I was a little confused when I saw a huge, completely empty bedroom.
Frowning, I closed the door and decided to try other closed doors in the corridor. I stopped at the next one, it was locked. I guessed this might be Matt's office and moved on to the next one without much effort. When I pulled down the knob, the door opened and I was greeted with a room completely darkened by the electric blinds, even though it was a bright morning sun outside. Still, the contours of the king-size bed in front of the window were easily discernible.
I walked in, leaving the door open because it might have been another guest room and I still wasn't sure if I was in the right room. But as I took each step closer to the bed, I encountered something that made my heart beat fast enough to rip it out. A shadow. He lay in the dark, not between the sheets but on top of them. The man lying completely naked. Matt...
I looked back once in panic. I knew I left the door open and it would be a little weird if the maid decided to show up right now and find me with my sister's naked husband. Crazy weird.
Still, I was in no mood to think about it. The last time I saw him naked was in Vermont and god knows how long it had been since that time. That wasn't even the problem. The problem was Matt. His nakedness. He looked like a very different person from the man lying in front of me who showered in the communal showers at the gym. I don't know why I felt this way, he had changed. Definitely not in a bad way.
Matt's body, which had been away from sports for a while, now looked a little thinner. But not enough to emphasize the annoying back muscles strained by his upturned arms and surprisingly round, smooth, firm ass, which were revealed once he turned around, letting out a deep grunt, unaware of my presence.
I swallowed and immediately turned my eyes to another spot, but I couldn't help but drift towards him again. Both of his arms were tucked under the pillow, long enough for me to see his morning erection hiding between his thick thighs and his shaved balls just below when his legs were slightly spread apart for a more comfortable position. That's too much...
I turned to go out, I was freaking out. I walked and went to the door. I didn't give him a second glance as I placed my hand on the knob. It wasn't to go out and close the door.
It was to lock him up...
Ben, what are you doing? God, please don't let me go crazy... What am I thinking when I lock myself in this room with him? Why did I do this?
I subconsciously put my hands through my hair, turned around and began to approach the bed to see that he was completely fast asleep. I didn't make any noise, but I'm sure if he had been even slightly awake, the sound of my heartbeat heard from outside would have easily woken him up.
I sat down on the bed next to the naked man, careful not to let even my clothes rustle. Should I wake him up? What am I supposed to say? I put my elbows on my knees, tucked a fist under my chin, and stared at his figure in the dark for a moment. The bad thing was, he was so close and I was still fighting the urge to touch him. Moreover, it didn't help that everywhere, the room, the sheets, smelled like him. What will I do?
Within minutes I was sitting there. Finally, I slowly lifted one hand up and was about to press my palm somewhere on the milky skin covering his broad back. A deep breath escaped from my nose. My hand hung in the air and I quickly took it back.
Because there was a growling, deep morning voice that I heard before two very strong arms wrapped around the back of my body and pulled me onto the bed.
"I thought you'd never come..."
