Prompt: no filter

Summary: Sometimes, we say words that hurt people and we can't take them back even if we meant well.
A/N: Day 2. I was planning on some fluff but it came to this.

"How long do you keep on waiting for him?"

Sakura froze. She was just doing some paperwork in her office when her blond best friend barged in with two cups of hot chocolate saying that it has been a while since Sakura had a break—by break she meant a mountain of patient files, research papers, proposals for the hospital and what nots and not thirty-six hour shifts in the operating room, never ending hospital rounds and emergencies.

Ino was seated across from her, casually sipping her drink, asking her that question as if it were nothing but the weather.

She put her pen down and looked at her best friend.

"We're not talking about this."

The Yamanaka heir raised her eyebrows and scoffed, "Why not? You've been waiting for years because of that guy, Sakura. Everyone's getting married and on their way to having their own families while you're here, buried on your work, waiting for a guy who always pushed you away and even tried to hurt you, twice."

Her temper rising, she took a deep breath and said, "It's none of your business, Ino."

"Don't give me that 'It's none of your business, Ino.' crap! I'm your best friend and I don't want you wasting your time and life over someone like him! He's been back in the village for a while now but he hasn't made any effort when it comes to your relationship. Does he even really care about you? Maybe you just have to wake up and accept the fact that he'll never love—" she stopped mid-sentence, seeing the hurt on Sakura's eyes.

"Sakura, I—" she cut her off. "What the hell, Ino? Don't you think I don't know all that? Did you think I haven't been trying to get over him? Did you really think that I really want to feel miserable all my life?! Because you're wrong, I know all of that, I've known it from the start. I've been trying to get over him ever since god knows when! I don't want to feel like this but it's not like I have a choice!"

She could feel tears forming in her eyes and she saw the guilt on Ino's face. She knew that the blonde meant well but she couldn't stop being hurt from her words, knowing that they were all true.

With a defeated, sad sigh, she said, "I appreciate the concern, Ino, I really do. But you know, sometimes, we just keep on loving someone, even if that person doesn't and won't feel the same. Even if it kills us. We just do."
