We're Older Now

Chapter 18

Xavier rubs my shoulders as I get ready for my first day at work with him. I'm nervous of course, but more excited than anything else. I'm not sure how I'm going to cope with Xavier peering over my shoulder every few minutes though. I know he means well but it will become exhausting. It's already hard enough at home, if I so much as sneeze he's by my side worried.

"You'll be shared between me and this nice lady Carol Milton, the students call her Ms Milton. It's just because you're doing English as well as history." I smile and turn slightly, pressing my lips to his cheek.

"I know Xavier you've told me already." He takes a shaken breath and gives a hesitant nod. I think he's more nervous than I am.

"Alright, we ready?" I nod my head and we stand up, walking out the front door and to the car.

"First off we have to see the principal. He's a nice guy, I think you'll like him. Oh I also think it's best to tell him about your pregnancy so he goes lenient if you get sick half way through a lesson." I nod my head, half listening to what he says as I watch the houses go by outside the car window, squeezing his hand every now and again to show in listening.

"Also, the kids are good kids. Most of them." I nod my head.

"I'm boring you aren't I?" I turn to face him now, watching as he slightly glances my way.

"No honey...well yes but only because you've told me this already." He blushes and nods his head.

"I'm sorry, I'm nervous. I mean, first you're my student now you're my pregnant wife to be who is about to become my coworker for the next two weeks." I smile and rub circles on his hand with my thumb.

"I know, but you don't need to stress. If I'm not stressed than neither should you be." He nods his head and moves my hand up to his lips, pressing his lips to it for a sweet soft kiss.

We finally arrive and he parks the car in an assigned parking spot. I unbuckle my belt and slide out of the car with my hand bag.

"So, I have period three and period five off today which will be the lessons you have with Ms Milton." I nod my head.

We walk up to the office together, walking into the principals office to let him know I've arrived just so that he can give me the same rundown of how this will work that Xavier has been giving me the past few days.

A man with dark, but greying hair, sat at a seat behind a wooden desk, his eyebrows scrunched as he concentrates on the laptop screen in front of him. Xavier clears his throat to catch his attention.

When he looks up he has a welcoming smile on his face. I smile back and shake his hand as he stands up and extends it to me.

"You're Xavier's fiancé yes?" I nod my head.

"Yes, I'm Piper Smith." I say with a smile.

"Well, I'm sure Xavier has gone over how the formalities work. Now, in regards to your break, you will have it at the same time as the students, you can either stay in Xavier's classroom like he usually does or sit in the staff room. We have vending machines for the teachers, and if you don't want that, the canteen does preorders, special orders for the staff." I nod my head as I take in all the information.

"I can see you're pregnant so I will just say, if you need a day off or feel sick during the day don't hesitate to stay or go home because we care more about your health than anything else and we will make sure it doesn't reflect badly on your final grade of work experience." He gives a reassuring smile and let's me go after that.

"Well time to get the day started." Xavier says grinning and walking me to his first class. I sigh, okay Piper, no need to get nervous now.
