Gon and I continued to jog side by side, Shoto barely keeping up with us. I glanced over my shoulder, Shoto looked fatigued, Gon and I could easily lose him. "Hey, Gon, let's kick it up a notch." My voice is drowned out from the excited cheers from the crowd.
"Ok!" Gon nods, and starts running slightly faster. I pick up my pace slightly too, but to my surprise, Shoto also starts running slightly faster. I guess these hero course students aren't as weak as I thought. No big deal, this isn't even my full speed, nor is it Gon's. Gon was still comfortable with the pace, there's no reason to speed it up even more. It's best to conserve our energy for later in the race. "Look, it's the robots from the entrance exam!" Gon points up towards the hunks of metal. They weren't really hard to deal with in the entrance exam, so it isn't much of an obstacle. The robots are slow, and if someone really wanted to, they could just run past them. The only downside is that the robots have lasers, and you can't exactly outrun lasers.
Gon jumps forward without a second of hesitation, obliterating a robot in one punch. Gon uses the falling robot's momentum to jump forward, gaining a substantial lead. "Sorry, Killua, but I want to win this whole thing." Gon waves from over his shoulder, and a smile creeps on to my face.
"In your dreams." I start sprinting, trying to close the gap that Gon created through defeating the robots. My attempts were futile. When it comes to my raw speed, Gon and I are pretty much equal. Soon enough I reached the next obstacle. A series of rocks and ropes, meticulously hooked together with the goal being to cross to the other side. Gon was already halfway across the obstacle, hoping from stone to stone like it was nothing. I don't have nearly enough raw jumping power to jump from stone to stone like Gon, but...I shift my aura to my legs, my aura can help me. All of this training with Bisky has really helped with my aura control, so passing this stage will be a piece of cake.
Sure enough, the obstacle was nothing that was too hard, and I'm still in second even with the brief pause, but there is no time to waste. For all I know, they could only be letting the top three move on to the next round. Plus, I can't let Gon win, I have chocolate on the line. Gon said he would buy me whatever chocolate I want if I beat him in the sports festival, so I can't let him win any event.
The next obstacle was a landmine. Gon was carefully tip-toeing across the field, trying to not set off any bombs. They probably won't hurt us, but it would definitely slow me down if I just try sprinting across the field because the bombs will just hurl me into the air, even if I land smoothly, the time in the air will slow me down. As an experiment, I step on one mine. Counting in my head the delay between the pressure from my foot and the explosion. Faster than I could blink, the explosion flew me into the air. If I use Godspeed again, I'll definitely be able to just run across, beating Gon. I slip the taser out of my pocket, and hold it to my inner wrist, switching the on switch. A surge of electricity courses through me. I let the electricity take over me and run across. Mines go off behind me, but they don't cause me to slow down. The electricity dies down. Glancing behind me, I see Gon a few feet behind me. Shoto just reached the beginning of the land mine, basically securing my spot in the top 2.
"Aww, come on! That thing makes you go so fast!!!" Gon whines as he picks up his speed. Gon closes the Gon being only a few inches behind me, but I still have the lead. Ahead of us is a tunnel with a light at the end. The end of the race. I push forward and cross the finish line, "Goal!" I say, another voice speaking at the same time.
"I win!" Gon cheers, pumping his fist in the air.
"Nuh-uh! I definitely won. You have to buy me chocolate now!"
"Wow folks, that was a close call. Let's see that replay!!!" The loud banana person screams into the mic. Gon and I crossing the finish line in slow motion appear on all of the screens in the stadium. I watched closely, Gon and my foot stepped down across the finish line at exactly the same time.
"Well it looks like we tied again. I guess that means I'll buy you chocolate, and you'll buy me dinner. That's fair."
"What are you talking about? My foot definitely stepped down first." I cross my arms and turn away from Gon, sticking my nose up in the air. The two of us erupt into a playful banter.
"It's a tie!" The loud banana person yells again. The crowd bursts into murmurs, everyone wondering what the tie will do to the next events. "Gon Freecs from Class 1-A and Killua Zoldyck from Class 1-B will share the first place spot! A first in UA history!" The crowd started cheering for both of us. Gon waves to everyone in the crowd, smiling widely.
People slowly started to arrive about a minute after me and Gon made it through the obstacle course. "Wow, you guys are unreal." A guy with red, spiky hair came up to us, greeting Gon with a high five.
"Thanks Ejiro! It sucks that we tied again though. I thought I had it in the bag after gaining that lead. Guess it goes to show just how amazing Killua is!" My face heats up. Why does Gon always go around saying such embarrassing things?!
"Shut up, Gon!"
"Oh, you're the guy that is always with Gon! Killua right?" I give a nod. "It's nice to actually meet you! I'm Ejiro Kirishima."
"I know. Gon doesn't shut up about Class 1-A. I swear, he could run his mouth for years and still not run out of things to say." I sigh.
"I'm right here you know!" I put my hand on Gon's face, causing his words to become muffled.
"The first round for the first year is now complete! Let's view the results now, shall we." I turn my head to look at the board near Midnight. "Due to the tie in first place, only the top 41 places will move onto the next phase. For the rest of you, we have prepared other events for you to shine. Now the real fun is about to begin. The chance to fully move yourselves into the limelight, give it your best. Let's see what we have in store for you next!" The screen besides Midnight starts to spin, before landing on calvary battle. What the heck is that?
"Allow me to explain. Participants will form their own group of two to four members. In theory, it's basically the same as a regular playground game, but there is one difference. Each player has been assigned a point value based on the results from the obstacle course."
"Ohh, Killua, how many points do you think we're worth!?"
"Shut it, I'm trying to listen."
"The point assignments go up by five, starting at the bottom. The point value assigned to the two first places is..." My eyes travel to me and Gon's names on the board. Shit. "5 MILLION EACH!!"
