"Yunji! What are you doing here?"
Yunji looked up from her seat in the corner, coming eye-to-eye with their ballet teacher, Miss Lee. The dawn was still fresh, a pleasant, spring breeze fanning the side of her face from the open window. Miss Lee looked rather shocked, dropping her handbag onto a nearby bench before approaching the sitting girl.
"Good morning, Miss Lee." Yunji bowed her head hastily. "I came for practice."
Miss Lee grimaced. "Yes, I realized. But I thought you wouldn't come, since you were granted permission to miss dance class until the term break."
"Well," Yunji sighed, looking down into the opened book in her lap. "I'm so used to coming here every morning that it felt weird not to."
Miss Lee pulsed her lips together, staring down at her.
"That's quite all right. You can observe the class."
Yunji nodded her head, and returned her gaze to the book, weirdly bored and uninvolved in its contents.
It wasn't long before the rest of the ballet class began pouring in, whispers prevalent over the silence. Whispers that were most definitely aimed at the head ballerina's presence. But Yunji gritted her teeth, bearing the humiliation with valor. She knew how strange she looked, considering that any other student would've enjoyed their almost two-week vacation with pleasure. However, Yunji felt suffocated at the dorms, and couldn't bear the thought of skipping practice, regardless of her condition.
So she put up with it.
Dahae and Sumi entered the room, quickly rushing up to Yunji.
"See? I told you she'd be here already." Sumi proclaimed, "Yunji, girl, you should've waited for us. We would've helped you with your bag."
"It's fine." Yunji muttered, shutting her book and sliding it off her lap. "I can manage."
"Are you sure?" Dahae asked, concerned look on her face. "The doctor said you should walk as little as possible."
"It's a five minute walk from the dorms. Besides, the room was getting stuffy." Yunji retorted, looking up to face them. "I'm fine, seriously. Just focus on the lesson."
Her two friends glanced at each other, but conceded to Yunji's request, walking off to get ready for their lesson.
Since the big concert had been their focus for weeks, Miss Lee decided to dedicate the remaining week of the term to technique. Yunji gazed on as the students were asked to perform basic stunts, ones that she'd also done a million times before. Her body itched with want, with need, because she knew she could also be up there, doing all these steps perfectly. Unfortunately, that was impossible, considering she'd made such a basic mistake, and had ended up with a twisted ankle.
For the first time ever, class seemed to pass by slowly. By the time lunch time arrived, Yunji felt practically exhausted, the misery of sitting in the corner far worse than any physical effort. Sumi and Dahae propped her up to her feet, and despite her lack of appetite, insisted that she had to go eat lunch with them.
