The infirmary was chillier than the usual room.
That was all that Yunji had managed to gather throughout her hour-long stay.
The girl's injury had turned out to be a mild sprain, bold reds, blues, and purples now decorating her ankle beneath the bandages. She'd been recommended to go to a hospital to get it checked out properly, but since this wasn't an emergency, an ambulance was not called.
The whole process felt like hell. Yunji's pointe shoes had been ripped from her foot and put away like any simple shoe. The nurse's touches and twists of her ankle had hurt at an entirely new level. Watching her vital body part being wrapped in thick bandages felt like a part of her identity was being buried down under the ground and brutally stepped on. And having to understand the nurse's and her teacher's frantic questions and words of encouragement was near impossible, as even the voices in her head felt incomprehensible.
And then, Sumi and Dahae had rushed in like concerned parents, showering Yunji with the same exact questions and words of encouragement. And despite their pure intentions, they were soon sent away by the nurse, who told them that Yunji needed to rest.
In an attempt to put the girl at ease, the nurse had offered her some calming pills, which Yunji had accepted. It didn't take long for her heartbeat to even out and for her mind to clear up. But that was no better than her frantic state beforehand, as she was still in deep and utter misery.
Curtesy of Dahae, Yunji's phone was resting on the table right beside the bed at the nurse's bed. The latter had excused herself and allowed Yunji some time alone. Hence, the young girl reached her hand out from where she laid on her side, and turned the device on.
A couple of un-received calls were the first thing to greet her. All from the same person.
Yunji inhaled sharply and shakily, her fingers moving slowly towards the unlock button. It felt almost dangerous as she tapped on the phone icon, and stared at the 5 red lines. However, with yet another touch, she shifted her hand to her ear and listened in to the single ring that it took for the other person to pick up.
"Yunji! Oh my goodness, are you alright?"
Yunji's teeth sunk into her bottom lip. Fresh tears prickled at her eyes.
The sense of doom had finally collapsed inside of her.
"Mom..." her voice came out broken and shaky as liquid began pouring down her face. The sobbing was quick to follow. Yunji's hoarse voice echoed throughout the room, and her sobs were unstoppable, as all of the girls emotions poured out all at once.
"My baby..." her mother's comforting voice sounded on the other end of the line.
"I feel so embarassed." She choked out, quiet sobs becoming muffled by her hand on her mouth. "It was so humiliating."
