"When will Mr. Son come?" I murmured, standing at the school gate as I scanned through the road for my car. It had been almost ten minutes, yet there was no sign of my driver

Usually, he would arrive at least thirty minutes before school ended, always waiting before I even stepped out of class. But today, for some reason, he was nowhere to be seen, and he hadn't even informed me that he would be late

I sighed, checking my phone again and again when suddenly I heard a voice behind me

"Oh, Y/N?"

I turned around at the sound of my name and found Ji-Yeong, my brother in law walking toward me with a few of his friends

"Everyone has already left. Why are you still here?" One of his friends, who was also my classmate, asked curiously

"Umm... my driver hasn't arrived yet" I admitted

"Oh" They nodded in understanding but then another guy spoke, his voice dripping with mockery "Are we seriously going to stand here and talk with her? With this unlucky bitch?"

For a moment, silence fell between us

I blinked, my fingers curling around my phone as I slowly turned to the guy who had just spoken. His lips were curled into a smirk, his eyes gleaming with amusement, as if he was waiting for a reaction

Ji-Yeong stiffened beside him, his jaw tightening

"What did you just say?" I asked, my voice calm... too calm

The guy scoffed "Oh, come on. Don't act like you don't know what people say about you. Everyone calls you that behind your back anyway. I'm just saying it to your face"

Hearing him I clenched my jaw, feeling something sharp twist in my chest

'Unlucky'

It wasn't the first time I'd heard it. I knew the whispers, the looks, the way people hesitated before speaking my name, as if it carried some sort of curse. They hate me...

Because of what happened to my mother

Because of what happened to my family

Because of the choices I never even got to make

I should've ignored him. Should've just turned away. But something about his smug expression made my blood boil

"And what exactly makes me unlucky?" I asked, tilting my head slightly to the side

He grinned as if it satisfied him "Well, let's see. Wherever you go, trouble follows. Your mother died when you were born. Your family is a mess. Your own brother hates you. You're just bad luck, Y/N"

My breath caught in my throat. Everything he said was true, but hearing it say out loud from some stranger was something I never expected...

I saw Ji-Yeong's face darkened as he finally snapped on his friend "That's enough!"

But the guy only laughed "Oh, come on! I'm just being honest. Isn't that what friends do?"

Ji-Yeong took a step forward, his shoulders tense "I said, that's enough!"

The guy clicked his tongue but finally shut up, rolling his eyes as if we were overreacting. His friends, though, were watching, some amused, some hesitant, some clearly uncomfortable

I inhaled deeply, pushing back the sting in my chest. I had lived with these kinds of words for years. I had learned not to let them break me

So I finally forced a smirk, crossing my arms "You know what? You're right!"

The guy blinked, caught off guard

"I am unlucky... yes... Because I just wasted my time standing here listening to a complete idiot talk nonsense"

Laughter erupted from the others, some pressing their lips together to not make noise, while Ji-Yeong smirked beside me. The guy's expression twisted in embarrassment, his face turning red

"You little—" The guy started but before he could say another word, Ji-Yeong interrupted "Please don't mind him, he's always like that... But if you want, I can give you a lift. We live in the same area anyway" he offered, his voice casual, but the way he emphasized 'same area' made it clear he didn't want to raise any suspicions in front of his friends

I was about to respond when suddenly a sleek black car pulled up to the curb

My eyes flickered toward it, my heart skipping a beat as I recognised the car and the owner... Jungkook

I exhaled slowly, turning back to Ji-Yeong "Thanks for the offer, but looks like my ride is here" He nodded, his gaze lingering as I stepped away

As soon as I slid into the passenger seat and shut the door, Jungkook spoke

"Who were they?" His tone was calm, but there was something dark in his eyes

"No one important... just your brother and his friends" I muttered, fastening my seatbelt

Jungkook's fingers tapped against the steering wheel as he glanced at me, then at his brother and his friends outside "Your face says otherwise... did anyone said anything?"

I let out a bitter chuckle "You're reading too much into it" but he didn't respond. Instead, he reached into the backseat and pulled out several large shopping bags, placing them on my lap

I blinked "What—?"

"I told your driver not to come today because I wanted to pick you up myself. And since I was a little late... I bought these for you"

Curious, I peeked inside the bags, only for my breath to hitch

A Louis Vuitton OnTheGo BB bag

All the best-selling Victoria's Secret body mists

A complete set of Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture lipsticks

And perfumes from Versace and Prada

I couldn't help but stared at him suspiciously "Yesterday, you bought me snacks. Today, all these... without me even asking? What's going on, huh?... Wait—" I narrowed my eyes "Tell me honestly... you've fallen in love with me, haven't you?" I wiggled my eyebrows teasingly making Jungkook cringed, and with a scoff, he flicked my forehead

"Why would I, huh?" he retorted "Hia dragged me to the mall today, and while I was already buying stuff for her, I thought I would get something for you too"

"Hmm" I hummed, nodding with an exaggerated pout

"Anyway, do you like them?" he asked, watching me carefully

I sighed, glancing at the bags again "Well... gifts from rich people are always nice. They're always expensive" I said it sarcastically, but deep down, I really loved them

Jungkook chuckled, his voice as sarcastic as mine "You say that as if you don't belong to a rich family yourself"

"I do" I admitted exhaling slowly "But my brother never spoiled me with expensive things unless it was necessary... or to put on a show for others"

Jungkook glanced at me briefly, but said nothing

A few moments passed before he spoke again "Today's my day off... so do you want to go anywhere with me?"

I hesitated. Then, without thinking, I said "Take me to my mansion. I want to see Appa... It had been two weeks since I last met him in person"

Jungkook nodded. Giving me a thumbs-up he started the car, turning it toward my family's estate

As I leaned back against the seat, I bit my lip looking out the window

'I just hope he isn't home'

I thought, sighing to myself I closed my eyes for a brief momen

'Please, just let me meet Appa in peace... I really don't want him to embarrass me with his childish remarks in front of Jungkook"
