"Oh my god, Y/N, you got so much thinner!" my sister Eun-Ha exclaimed, rushing toward me as soon as Jungkook and I entered the house. She threw her arms around me before I could even react, pulling me into a tight hug
I glanced at Jungkook from the corner of my eye, he stood a few steps behind me, letting Eun-Ha have her moment
"It's nothing like that" I mumbled, returning her hug briefly, trying to appear normal and smiled, though it wasn't genuine "It's good to have you back!"
Eun-Ha pulled back, scanning me from head to toe with concern etched on her face "You're not taking care of yourself, are you? Jungkook, you promised to take care of her then, how can you let her look like this?" Jungkook chuckled lightly, scratching the back of his neck "I try, but she's stubborn sometimes, you know how she is" I shot him a quick glare, but Eun-Ha didn't seem to notice
"How have you been, Y/N? I really missed you so much." Her tone was filled with excitement as she clasped my hands in hers "I... I missed you too, unnie" I replied, forcing a smile, my voice trembled slightly, but I hoped she wouldn't catch it
I stared at her eyes, trying to read what she was thinking but her thoughts, however, were eerily blank! I closed my eyes for a fleeting second, trying to break through the barrier of her mind, but there was nothing, this wasn't normal, was it?
Just then Jungkook stepped closer, his hand finding the small of my back. The familiar warmth of his touch grounded me, and for a brief moment, I forgot about the unease bubbling inside me
"Let's... let's get inside" I said quietly and hold Jungkook's hand to bring him into the living room, my father, brother, his wife and Eun-Ha's husband Beom-Seok were all sitting there on the couch, having some conversation. I and Jungkook greeted them with a slight bow as we're the youngest ones here
"Are you okay?" Jungkook whispered softly as we sat down on sofa, his eyes searching mine and I can never understand how he always find it out if I'm not feeling well
"I'm fine" I lied, sitting comfortably on the couch, he frowned but gladly didn't push further "Y/N, if something's bothering you, you know you can—" "I said I'm fine, Jungkook" I interrupted, my tone sharper than I intended, I saw the flicker of hurt in his eyes and immediately regretted it
"Okay" he said quietly, relaxing sitting beside me
Later that afternoon, as we gathered in the living room after lunch, my sister in law Hee-Won brought us some panna cotta as dessert
As I was eating I noticed Jungkook stealing glances at me, his concern was evident, but I avoided meeting his gaze
"So..." Beom-Seok began, setting his plate down "During the marriage, I didn't got a chance to talk to Jungkook much" Jungkook nodded "I won't ask much but, how are you both doing together? Y/N is very young to get married, but I hope she's being nice" "Yeah! We're doing great together, both of us are still learning things together" I nodded in agreement, but Eun-Ha's eyes narrowed slightly, flicking between the two of us
"Really? That's nice to hear" she said, tilting her head "But you two seem... different" My breath hitched, but Jungkook answered smoothly "Different? How so?" Eun-Ha shrugged, a small smile playing on her lips. "I don't know. Just a feeling. Maybe I'm jet-lagged"
Her words felt odd and for the first time, I wondered if she was hiding something. The blankness of her mind earlier, her sudden curiosity, it all felt calculated, I can't understand why I was feeling this way... she loved me, didn't she?
As the conversation carried on, I stayed quiet, my mind racing. Whatever was happening, I needed to act fast. Protecting Jungkook was my priority, even if it meant shielding him from truths that could destroy us both
