dinner went well. paris and jess were debating authors as rory kept shooting tori looks. the pair were due a lengthy discussion about tori and jess once they were alone.

at least in that moment she was having fun. seeing paris debate was always entertaining and jess was actually keeping up with her. a feat not easily done.

paris did not like jack kerouac but jess did. rory even joined in the debate as tori laughed. she didn't mind jack kerouac, but she wouldn't be picking up any of the novels as a light read.

"typical guy response. worship kerouac and bukowski. god forbid you pick up anything by jane austen," paris argued.

jess pointed at her, "hey, i've read jane austen."

tori frowned, "you have? just a few weeks ago you said you hadn't."

jess shrugged, "i picked up emma. and i think austen would have like bukowski."

"boo," tori shouted. "when did you read emma?"

"after the book sale in the square."

tori stared but didn't say anything else. he had read the book after he saw her room, after he realised how much she loved the novel.

after paris discovered salt and pepper fries, rory got up to answer the ringing phone.

"oh, you should try hot sauce," tori exclaimed. "you'll love it." she grabbed it, pouring some out and watching as paris tried it. "verdict?"

"it's good."

tori cheered, "welcome to the world of shitty eating paris, you're gonna love it."

the conversation quickly switched topics as jess got up to grab a soda for himself and tori.

he handed her a can as he spoke, "i just can't get into poetry. it's like, 'jeez, just say it already. we're dying here'."

tori gasped, "shut up. poetry is a song without music. do you like music?"

rory reentered the room, trying her best to get jess to leave, insisting it was getting late and paris would want to get more study in. tori frowned as jess quickly realised what was happening. it took her second longer but once she realised, she glared, deciding to play dumb.

"why does jess have to leave? he's just eating dinner."

"yes, but dean doesn't like him," rory argued.

tori shrugged, "and? he's my friend. dean can suck it up." she held out an arm, stopping jess from standing. "jess stays. dean can deal with it."

"tori, please."

tori said nothing, leaning back in her chair. jess watched carefully. she grabbed the fries, offering him one which he took.

"tori, please," she tried again.
