tori complained the whole way to luke's as her and her mom shuffled along, both of their feet in pain from the dance. tori was a little more resilient, although she felt jet-lagged, she needed coffee before school, so she dragged her mom along, rory ahead of them, waiting for the pair.

they finally made it, lorelai calling herself the leader of the clan and alpha male when tori sat at the wrong table, refusing to move. as she rambled, the girl sighed, willing herself to get up and basically throwing herself into the chair next to her mom.

"you'd think i'd get some sympathy with an injured ankle," tori grumbled.

"please, you're totally milking that thing," lorelai exclaimed.

the bell in luke's jingled, signalling someone else had entered, and that someone else was kirk, with his trophy for winning the dance marathon.

"oh, excuse me, did my trophy bump you?" kirk questioned.

"no kirk, it didn't," lorelai told, not looking his way.

"oh, good, because the size of it is so large that sometimes i can't judge where the exact end of it is," kirk told.

tori choked back a laugh as he continued, going on about the shiny golden edges being sharp. that was until luke told him to move and threatened him so he would sit down.

they limped over to the counter, realising that they had taken thirty minutes to get there and the twins would have to leave soon. lorelai ordered herself a coffee.

"can i get a coffee too but with like extra coffee," tori ordered.

"no."

"fine, can i get two coffee's to go," she tried, not seeing as jess made his way out from the apartment above. he stopped in his tracks, face morphing into one of surprise as he rubbed his eyes.

"you're going to kill yourself one of these days."

"well, let's hope i don't die here and lose you business," she retorted. "can you make it three-"

"no."

"fine. i'll just take the two."

jess had been staring at her the whole time before he moved behind the counter, catching her eye.

"hi."

she smiled, "hey."

"hi," he repeated.

lorelai nodded, "hi."

he then turned to luke, "hi."

luke frowned, "hi."

he did the same to rory, who hadn't been filled in on the situation since she was slightly involved in the meltdown tori had had. tori didn't have the energy to explain it all at the time and lorelai had avoided the conversation thus far.
