the fact that lorelai was graduating was a celebration across the house. after seeing her mom very drunk following her final exam, tori began brainstorming as to what she could get her mom.

and behind their mom's back, rory had invited richard and emily, who despite everything were going to be proud of their daughter, even if they wouldn't say it.

tori was lounging on the sofa, flicking through a magazine as her mom ranted at the pair before the phone rang.

tori rolled off the coach, "i'll get it." she picked up the phone. "hello, gilmore household. if you want my mom she's had way too many margaritas to hold a conversation."

"hi," a familiar voice greeted. she didn't say anything. "hello?"

"hi."

"is this a bad time?"

"um, no, just hold on a sec." she pulled the phone away from her face. "um, i'm gonna take this upstairs. the music's too loud." she rushed away. "hey."

"you said that already."

"i did, sorry."

"so, what's up?"

she sat on her bed, "nothing. what about you? how's new york?"

"same."

"so, what have you been doing?" she asked.

"nothing much, just hanging out, in the park mostly."

"central park?"

"washington square park," he corrected. "it's cool, though. it's where david lee roth got busted."

"right."

"sounds like you've got a party going on there," he spoke.

she shook her head, "no, it's just me, my mom and rory. she's graduating so we're celebrating. or she is, with margaritas."

"right. okay, well, i'm gonna go, this is long distance."

"yeah, it is long distance."

"so, see ya."

"yeah," she muttered. "see ya."

---

the day of the graduation came around tori didn't know what possessed her but there she was, new york bus timetable in her bag and she was on a bus that was definitely not to chilton.

she was going to find jess in new york. somehow.

luckily, when she decided to wander washington square park, she saw the familiar boy, reading. he hadn't lied when he said he spent a lot of time there.

"i heard this is where they busted david lee roth, is that true?" she spoke, leaning over the bench he was sat on.

he smiled, "how you doing?"
