"Are you in the afternoon or the morning pool tomorrow Y/N?" Oikawa pokes your cheek and you try to bite his finger, he pulls away just in time and holds his hand wearily.

"Morning, why?" He grins at your response, "You can make my game against Date Tech later!" You frown, hearing the name of the team your team lost to last year.

"Okay," You say, sounding slightly dejected. "What's wrong?" Tooru puts his face in front of yours, you move back. "Nothing, I'm going to sleep. G'night."

He stares as you walk into your room and closes the door, he puts his hand on his head and scratches.

His mom suddenly pokes her head into the living room, "Tooru, she clearly wants you to go to her game too." She whisper-yells. Tooru freezes as his mom enters the room, planting a hand on her hip.

"What? Mom, Y/N hates me, why would she want me at her game?" He says it in a matter-of-fact tone, and Mrs. Oikawa rolls her eyes. "She does not hate you. The amount of time you guys have been spending together is proof."

The boy shakes his head, dismissing her claim.  "She waits for you to go to and from school every day."

"Because she has a horrible sense of direction and doesn't know the way," He explains, his lips in a firm line. Mrs. Oikawa nods, "Maybe that is true but she stays after her practices to watch your scrimmages with other teams."

"Same reason, she can't get home without me." The woman shakes her head, "You don't wait back for her when she has scrimmages."

"Uh, Mom, yes I do." He argues sassily, his mom raises an eyebrow, "But do you watch the match?"

He doesn't respond to this, and she pats him on the shoulder, "You'll know what to do. She's already started to take a step forward toward you—well she has been since she's got here. It's time for you to make an effort, she's not going anywhere anytime soon."

Oikawa throws his head back and rubs his face in frustration, "Mom, I literally have! I invited her to go to all these things with me, to see me! I don't know what else to do." The woman smiles softly at her son, "I know you'll do the right thing."

The boy scoffs, puffing his cheeks out.

"Whatever."

When you and Tooru first met it was brief, over Facetime while you were still in Canada. You sat alone in the kitchen, your computer in front of you and the faces of the Oikawas shining through. He sat there, not saying anything or looking at the screen. It didn't bother you, you assumed he was shy.

His parents were sweet, and your mom had known them well, or whatever your sister told you, you didn't even know if you could believe her. She was always a liar.

Your sister was your guardian for as long as you could remember, she was about 6 and a half years older than you and had to drop out of Uni to take care of you when you were young.

Luckily, money was never entirely a struggle as your mom sent checks every once in a while. But you and your sister had an interesting relationship. Yes, she was responsible enough at first, but as you got older she fell apart.

She had guys over constantly and left you to do the food shopping and the cleaning. Although she went to work sometimes, you did most of the work, and your relationship deteriorated swiftly.

You tell everyone you moved to Japan because of family problems, which was technically the reason. Your family had Japanese roots and you grew up speaking Japanese so it was always your sister's plan to move you guys to Japan, but now, after all this time you had a feeling she just sent you off to get rid of you.

No calls. No text backs. Nothing.

It's as if your sister didn't exist at all.

When you arrived at your future home, Mrs. Oikawa and Mr. Oikawa ran out to grab your bags. They had said their son wasn't home, instead he was at volleyball practice.

You felt confident you could connect with the shy boy because of your shared interest, and you were excited to have a "built-in friend" right from the start in this foreign place.

He didn't get home until late that night, and you were already sound asleep because of the long flight.

The next day he wasn't home again, he didn't eat dinner with his family, and he wasn't even making an effort to meet you.

You had thought that he must be avoiding you but his parents spoke so highly of him. He seemed like such an amazing person.

When you finally met, it was an accident.

Two weeks after you arrived, you both walked out of your rooms at the same time, he looked at you, seemingly shocked you were here.

"Good morning," You said, smiling. He gave you a once over before turning away, "Yeah hi." He grumbled, his back to you. He began to walk away but you followed him, persistent.

"So, uh, have you been training extra hard for volleyball?" He doesn't respond, just continues walking.

Assuming he was shy was naive, he just didn't like you.

You continued asking questions until he turned around and to face you, you stopped in your tracks and looked up at him.

"Can you just leave me alone? You're actually so annoying," He tsks his tongue and walks away again, "Such a pathetic waste of space."

You had stood there, feeling rejected, unwanted, and alone.

You hoped the school would bring you more friends and opportunities, oh how you hoped and hoped.

---

As time progressed, you talked to Tooru more. Talked was a nice way to put it, all the two of you did was fight constantly.

You had it in your mind you weren't going to be pushed around by him, if he was an ass you were going to be an ass.

You called Ashley, your best friend from Canada, almost every night and ranted to her about him. Every little thing he did was to aggravate you in some way, it was never playful.

The walls are thin.

In short, your relationship sucked, and his mother hated it. She tried to get the two of you to connect but it never happened.

She hoped that once volleyball officially started, you guys would connect. She despised the split up feeling of the house and the tense mood at the dinner table.

She wanted you to feel welcomed and at home, to have the chance to form relationships with others, to experience things you never had.

Before this could happen, she knew she'd have to wait for her son to mature.
