You were stressing.

How the fuck were you going to bring up sleeping over at another boy's house—which Tooru has brought up has feelings for you—in Tokyo for a week...and a half.

You hadn't seen the setter much in a while, which was worrying you a little bit because usually he was attached to your hip.

But you figured he was busy—he did graduate after all, and was probably figuring out college stuff.

You lay down on his bed, sprawling out and tossing your arms over your face.

Moments later, you were asleep.

When you woke up, you groggily wandered out of the room to see Emma and Tooru in the kitchen.

"Hi." You greet with a yawn, striding over and sitting at one of the chairs at the kitchen table.

"Talk later?"

"Sure honey."

And then Tooru just grabs his stuff off the table and goes to his room.

okay...

"Do you want to bring some sweets to the last practice tomorrow for all the third years that are leaving? Tooru said no." You give her a faint smile, "Of course. Can I help?"

And so you and Emma baked cookies and brownies for a few hours, happily listening to music and chatting.

You never did anything like this with your mom, or sister, so you were basking in the bliss of quality time.

When you were going to sleep, your mind tried to wander to Tooru and his lack of—attention? Attentiveness? Care? But you push the thoughts aside, saving it for a conversation in private.

—-

Now you were in private, not uttering a word as he drives to practice.

He was exuding this aura that if you spoke he'd swerve off the road so you kept your lips sealed, weirded out but also a little hurt.

You don't even walk into the gym together, he did take the baked goods so you didn't have to carry them so that was nice you supposed.

"Thank you for the sweets Y/N!" A lot of the third years exclaimed once you walked in, taking you off guard.

You laugh, smiling bashfully. "Of course, Tooru's mom helped too."

And so you spent the first fifteen minutes chatting and eating while you stretched, today was supposed to be fun but still a challenge.

Once the team's got started you spotted Tooru fooling around with his friends, Iwaizumi chasing him around as Makki held him back.

You smiled, happy he wasn't so tense anymore.

"Grab a partner for this next drill!" You didn't even need to look at Tooru to know he wasn't asking you. He was being exhaustingly cold, not mean but not very friendly for someone that told you he loves you.

"He must be mad at me or something." You whisper to Kitomi, who shrugs, "Ask him."

You cringe, confrontation is not your strong suit.

Clearly neither is his

You still hadn't brought up the Tokyo trip, it had been a week since Teruhashi and Akaashi filled you in on the details.

"Get behind him on the line, and talk to your not-boyfriend!" She hisses, shoving your back.

"Fine! Jesus..." You grumble, knowing she was right.  Not confronting him was the old way, your new way of actually communicating how you felt was what you needed to do.

"Tooru." He half glances behind him, turning his head forward and swallowing.

"Hm?" He manages to push out, inwardly hoping the line would go faster.

"What's the matter?"  He closes his eyes, doing that fake smile he does.

"Nothing's wrong." Your brow raises as your lips part slightly in disbelief, he'd never done his fan girl smile at you.

"Yeah, okay." You scoff before taking a deep breath, "You don't need to tell me, just don't avoid me."

"I'm not." He attempts to reassure you, walking onto the court to receive.

Once he passes you run on, passing the ball hit at you and moving on. "You are."

You say to him as you cross paths, both going to catch a ball as someone receives it on each side.

"Y/N I'm fine, I assure you." He says in exasperation, his light tone faltering. You both slow to a walk onto the next line, "Okay sure. You're fine but now I'm not."

He exhales, uttering softly, "Okay."

"Yep. So now let's talk about.." You trail off, pursing your lips as it's his turn to do the drill.

You watch as he skillfully receives and digs every ball, taking the last one with his hands.  He stands at the next part of the drill which has to catch each ball you receive and watches you go through the motions he just took.  Once you finish he ducks under the net to the next area, you groan because you have to wait a minute before you can catch up.

"What's up with ms. goody goody?"   Maddog asks Tooru once the setter gets on line, his eyes focused on your scowling face on the other courts.

"Nothing!" Tooru says, strained, "She's fine. Just grumpy."

Kyotani grunts humorously, "Couples quarrel?"

You jog over, greeting Maddog because Tooru had found a way to slip in front of him.

"He cut me!" The bleached buzz growled, looking at you in annoyance.

"He did cut! That little bitch!" You exclaim, watching as he "accidently" messes up the drill so he can skip ahead one more person.

"I can't believe him." You grumble in annoyance. You were addressing an issue that was bothering you for like—the first time and he was running away.

You plant your hands on your hips, you had the entire car ride to discuss, it was going to be all peachy.

—-

"You're a dick."  You finally spit it out after holding it in for two hours of practice and five minutes in the car.

Tooru has to look to the side to hide his smile, you were still so charming even when calling him names.

"Great." He coughs, composing himself. You blink twice, the annoyance fully settling into your being. You didn't need to ask him to do stuff anyway.

"I'm going to Tokyo next week."

"Lovely."

You cross your legs and your arms, "And I'm staying with Akaashi."

".." You nod at his silence, "Two and a half weeks."

"Amazing. I hope you have fun." He smiles at you and you smile back, fake as ever.

"Thank you."
