"I hate the cold," You say as Emma-san wraps her scarf around your neck. "That's ironic," She muses, you chuckle, but as a gust of wind blows your smile drops. "Ugh."
"Oh get over it," Tooru inputs and you glare at him.
The station announces the last call to get on the train and you sigh, "I have to go, thank you for driving me here. You're the best Emma-san." She hugs you, and you and Tooru death stare each other as you step on the train.
As the doors close, you faintly hear a frantic, "Tobio-chan—?!" And then someone practically dives into the train through the closing doors.
You stare in shock at the boy as he gets up and brushes himself off, "Um.." You trail off. He's panting, "H....hi." He greets you with a bow in between breaths and you nod back.
"What are you here for? All Japan?" You ask despite already knowing the answer, he nods but the train starts to shake at the same time. You both frantically grab the poles around you to fight for balance.
"Wait, let's sit down," You suggest, and lead him to some vacant seats where you sit across from each other. "Is there a camp for girls too?" He asks, you nod your head yes, "Yeah I'm headed to some arena I can't remember the name of. But we didn't get the Olympic one, did you guys?"
He nods, "Wow lucky."
You look out the window, I've got an hour and thirty minutes with this guy.
He either looks completely neutral, or mad all the time, you conclude.
"Hey Tobio-chan, why are you a setter?" You create conversation after a while of silence, he looks at you, mulling over his answer in his head.
Does it sound crazy if I say the real reason?
He thinks to himself, overthinking the interaction, "Well, uh, the setter is the control tower of the team, they touch the ball more than anyone else on the entire court." He gauges your reaction; you're staring at him with interest shining in your eyes encouraging him to continue, "The setter can make or break a team, they have the power to make those around them better or worse."
You make an 'o' shape with your mouth, "That's a really cool answer." You admire, then put your hand on your chin.
"I don't know why I'm an outside, I just went wherever since I played beach." You look at him with a shrug, "I didn't really know otherwise." He nods in understanding, "I saw some of your clips on the beach."
You smirk, raising your eyebrows at him, "Aw did you look me up Tobio? That's so sweet." He tsks his tongue and looks out the window, "Shut up."
You laugh, "I'm just kidding, I'm worse since I've seen you play.." You count on your fingers, "Three times now." You hold up your hand, "Giant man during prelims," You put one finger down, "First match against Seijoh on videotape," You put another down, "And this past match." You put your hand in a fist as all fingers have been put down.
"Oh yeah," Tobio says and then he gets serious, "How were you able to predict where Yamaguchis serves were going?" You lean away at his sudden intensity.
"Yamaguch-who?" You tilt your head, "Our pinch server."
"Ohhh. I don't know, I have a lot of experience reading the body language of servers. Especially float servers because that's the most common thing you'll see on beach."
He acknowledges your statement with his eyes and then looks out the window intensely. You chuckle silently and then follow his lead.
