It's not fair.

Life isn't fair, Tooru knows this.

You didn't deserve any hurt or disrespect, or anything bad that came your way.

He watches as you and the two idiots argue, a distinct red mark on Matsunn's face from Makki hitting him with the volleyball.

He watches as you laugh and toss the ball up again, telling a story while passing the ball between the three of you.

He was starting to understand the reason of your little quirks. The more you told him about your life in Canada, the more he put the puzzle pieces together.

You need to be on time and neat—you had multiple jobs and would get yelled or screamed at if the house was messy—His scowl deepens.

How was he going to break any sort of bad news to you?

You had to know at some point but, when?

It was so hard for him to pinpoint an exact time he could do it without ruining your summer and/or his entire life plans.

He forces himself to look down at his hands, nodding faintly to what Iwaizumi is saying.

If you asked him to stay in japan with you—or even move to canada with you then he'd make it work.  He wanted to stay with you, but he knew he couldn't give up his dream.

You didn't even know his dream, granted he didn't know yours either.

What was your dream?

I mean, she's going into her third year of high school, she's got to have some sort of idea of what she wants to do.

"Oi shittykawa," Iwa throws a towel at his head, "Did you hear me?"

Tooru tears his eyes off of you, turning to face his friend. "Yeah, sorry." He rubs his eyes, "You want to go to med school?"

Iwa relaxes knowing his friend was listening, "Yep. Probably going to go to Tokyo Uni..If I get in."

"That's awesome Iwa-chan, I'm happy you know what you're doing." He says genuinely. He smiles at the ace, who quirks a brow.

"I think Y/N was the best thing to ever happen to you."

Oikawa blinks, "What?"

"You heard me." Iwaizumi affirms, crossing his arms.

The setter glances back at you, seeing the three of you now sitting in a circle and setting the ball around, now more enthralled in whatever you were talking about rather than the sport.

"That was kind of out of the blue.." Tooru lowers his voice, leaning forward.

Iwa shrugs. "I guess. I just have never seen you smile so much and so authentically until she started to live with you."

A pit forms in his stomach.

He's right.

Of course he's right.

It's like you showed him that he's good enough, more than good enough despite all the shit he put you through.

Oikawa puts his heads in his hands "How will I ever tell her?"

Hajime chuckles at his friend's distress, "You'll find a way."

Tooru nods slowly, not informing his best friend of the thoughts beginning to form in his head.

buzz buzz...buzz buzz

You look up from the spanish magazine you're holding to see your phone vibrating like crazy on your dresser. You groan as you roll of your bed, grabbing the device and checking who's calling.

"Hey Tobio, what's up?"  You answer, flopping back down on your bed.

"I got you an interview." You sit up, "What?!"

"Yeah." He says calmly, you cover your mouth. "No way oh my god!  Thank you Tobio!"

"Of course. Shimada mart tomorrow at noon, my coaches friend is interviewing you." You nod even though he can't see you, "Sounds perfect. I can't thank you enough."

"Don't worry about it.  Talk to you later."

"Okay, bye."  As soon as you click the hang up button you squeal, kicking your feet and throwing your arms in the air.

i don't think i've ever been this excited to work in my entire life

But you weren't excited about the work itself—well maybe a little bit because you hated having so much free time. You were excited about being able to give back to Emma and Kaidou after everything they've done, and you could save up for university.

Everything was going perfectly for the first time ever and for once, life didn't seem so unfair.
