The last thing you expected to wake up to was a call from a canadian area code.

"Tooru?!" You had called, staring at the device vibrating on your bed.

The boy had sprinted into your room at the sheer panic in your voice, "What baby? What happened?!"

You point to the cell phone on the bed, and he looks at you for an explanation.

"It could be my sister or my mother." You explain breathily. He cringes, putting him hand over his mouth and inhaling.

"Answer it." He grabs it and hands it to you, "Click accept."

Before you argue, you comply and answer spontaneously.

"Hello?"

"Y/N?"

Your breath catches in your throat. It was your sister's voice except it was small, strained.

"Candy?" Oikawa's brow quirks, Candy?

"Oh my god."  Candy sobs, breathing and sniffling into the phone.

Seems performative

Tooru notes, sitting down on your bed.

"Why are you calling me?" Y/N's blunt tone makes the bodily noises from the other line halt.

"I've gotten into a bit of a pickle." She giggles, and any trace of fright or sorrow is gone from her voice.

She sounded wasted, maybe she was, but this wasn't her phone number and you were curious.

"And what does that have to do with me?" You ask, sitting down next to Tooru on your bed.

"I need you to bail me out—"

"You're in jail?!" You exclaim, shooting a very concerned look to Tooru, who looks at you in disbelief in return.

His disbelief soon morphs into disgust. She hadn't answered you in almost a year yet she had your new number memorized? And she was calling to ask for money?

"I'm afraid I have nothing to send you." Oikawa nods, reaching over and rubbing your back in comfort and pride.

"I'm not—" She hiccups, "—Asking you to, ask the Oikawa's. They have more than enough."

A scoff instantly leaves your mouth, "No way! They're doing me enough of a favor by letting me stay here for free. I go to school for free, eat for free, I have a new phone for free. They don't need to pay for my dead beat sister to get out of jail—why are you even in there?!"

Your voice had risen, it was much easier to fight back on the phone.

"But..but Y/N.." She sniffles again and you sigh, pinching your brow, "Cut the shit Candy.  Whatever you're in there for, you deserve it."

There's a moment of silence before the woman on the other line speaks, any emotion gone from her voice. "Fine. Be that way. You're fucking worthless, can't even help your sister in a time of need."

"Do not give me that.  I paid our rent and fueled your addiction for years and I'm still not even 18!"

"It was your obligation 'till mom had to get involved and send you away." Candy spits into the phone, "She never loved you and she never will, by the way."

You laugh, "She didn't love you either babe."

"That's literally not true, she always bought me everything I wanted."

"And she still left as soon as you turned 18, didn't she? Made you sign away guardianship to you and
everything." Your sister scoffs, "Whatever. Burn in hell Y/N."

"Yeah whatever, same to you." And you click the hang up button.

You and Tooru are silent, absorbing the moment before you fall back on the bed, sighing.

You cover your face with your hands, tears starting to form at the corner of your eyes.

A small sob escapes you and you push your hands into your eyes, "This is so stupid." You laugh through your cries.

Tooru leans over you, moving your hands off your face, "No it's not. It's okay to cry." It was only the second time he had seen you do this and it made his heart hurt, you didn't deserve to feel like this.

"Grab my phone." You order him to grab the device, which was sitting on the floor. He complies and you unlock it, your fingers tapping violently against the screen.

"Holy fuck." You gasp, covering your mouth as you show him the article.

It's in french though so he stares at you blankly, "Oh sorry—it says she purposely or knowingly gave a kid laced pills. And the kid died."

"WHAT?!" He exclaims, "Can she even get bailed out?"

You shake your head, "No. She's not only a murderer, she's also stupid."

He chuckles, more in disbelief than humor and scoots closer to you. He drapes an arm around your shoulder as you snuggle up into him.

He kisses the top of your head, "I'm sorry baby."

You sigh, "It's not your fault. I'm fine."

He nods, "I know you are but I'm here if you're not."

"I'm sick and tired of this shit." You pant, wiping sweat off of your face with your wrist.

"Let's go, we got three more circuits." Tooru claps at you, one earbud in his ear and the other in his hand.

You groan, all you had been doing was sprint jog sprint for the entire morning. And it was hot. So hot.

"Today is Sunday, the day of rest." You say as you match your pace with him, jogging lightly, "We should be resting. I have a practice match tomorrow."

"So do I." He laughs, the sweat rolling off of him like a model. You roll your eyes at the sight, "Yeah whatever—Wait what?"

He shrugs, "I'm just tagging along. I can't play."

"Oh okay."

"Five more seconds!" He sings, beginning to ready himself to sprint for the next two minutes.

"Fuck off," You whine, taking off after him.

Once you finish up your last jogs and cool down lap, you and Tooru make your way to the convenience store around the corner.

You walk hand and hand, swinging your conjoined palms forward then backward, forward then backward.

"This route brings back memories.". The boy muses. You laugh, "That's right, this is where I slapped you."

He snorts. "Yeah, I deserved that one."

"You're damn right you did." His smile fades and his grip on your hand tightens, he was no longer laughing with you.

"Hey..I never got to ask you why you looked so terrified that day." Your brows shoot up and you laugh nervously, "Oh, it's nothing."

He sighs, looking at you with empathetic eyes. "Okay." He relents as he loosens his grip on your hands.

"I mean who wouldn't be terrified if they were backed into a wall by a boy they know hates them." You say pointedly.

"Well..Yes..That's true but you can tell me anything. I just want you to know that."

You smile at him, bumping your hip with his, "I know baby, just chill and enjoy our nice stroll. Kay?"

He nods, "Of course. Sorry."
