Becky grabbed a box from the Jeep and headed inside. She went upstairs to her room and placed the box down. Besides her bed and a few boxes, her room remained pretty empty. She sighed as she headed into the kitchen to take a drink of water. "How is the moving coming along?" Her mother asked as she took a glass and filled it with ice water for her. "I'm almost done, just a few more boxes." She sipped the water and leaned on the counter taking in the new house. "Well I'm glad. Your father should be here this evening for dinner so you can say hi. I'm cooking your favorite, spaghetti bolognese." She smiled placing her hand on her upper arm.
Becky smiled and continued to drink her water. She placed the glass down and walked towards her Jeep. She stood outside taking in the new surroundings and admiring the nature around. Their small house sat on the side of the rural road not too far from the small city. It was a 3 bedroom house with much greenery around. It was different than her house back in England, but she had to admit that the nature made up for it. Her mother had been living in Thailand for a few years and she had been staying with her father and sister in England to get a better education.
Her father was very strict on their studies and insisted that they be enrolled in the same private academy that he attended as a kid. Living with him had not been the easiest as he was gone most of the time for work and traveling, so it was up to Becky to look after herself and her younger sister. Becky had become used to being like a mother to Laila but the days that her father was at home, they spent most of the time arguing about everything. He was very strict and had little tolerance for any nonsense. Laila was not okay with him coming in every now and then and telling them what to do.
He was especially hard on Laila as she was younger and still wanted to go out and have fun with her friends, something that he found unnecessary and dangerous. His constant strict behavior led to Laila to rebel and sneak out frequently, leaving Becky to become her defender from her father's constant reprimand. Her father was so tired of their constant arguments that he decided to move them back to Thailand for a while to have their mother look after them in hopes of correcting their behavior. He decided to moved his job to Thailand for a few days to help with the girls settling in, but would be traveling back and forth from England to Thailand frequently.
Becky was now 21 and a graduate from college and Lila had just turned 19. They hadn't seen their mother for a while except for the constant FaceTime calls and visits over holidays and over the summer. Her mother and father were living separately due to her father's job which made their mother feel like she was living alone. To avoid any further arguments between them, they decided to live separately but visit each other occasionally. As weird as it sounds this seemed to work for them somehow. Her mother loved living in her hometown of Thailand due to the smallness of the city and kindness of its people.
Becky regretted leaving her life back in England with her old friends and even her ex boyfriend. They had decided to break things off due to the long distance and busy lifestyles, but decided to remain friends and keep in touch. She hoped somehow she could still make it work between them and eventually go back to England once things calm down with her family. She knew she was old enough to venture out on her own, but since she was a brand new graduate with little money and not much to her name, it would be difficult to try to work and live on her own. She decided to stay with her parents for a while until she was stable to move out on her own and it would allow her to also keep an eye on Laila who had taken the move pretty hard.
Becky took the last box from the jeep and headed back inside placing it on top of the other boxes in her room. She laid down on the bed looking up into the ceiling, a bit melancholy and thought about her new life in a strange city. Although she visited her mother , every now and then, she only stayed for a few days at a time and didn't bother to go out and explore much. As she laid there lost in thought, she noticed Lila passing by her open door. She turned to her and quickly asked, "Hey, where are you headed to?" Lila stopped in the middle of her tracks and looked at her hesitantly. "I'm just gonna go out for a bit." Becky looked at her questioningly and raised an eyebrow. "Where to and with who?" Lila sighed and dropped her hands to her side. "Just some friends."
