Rimuru POV:
(Ciel revealed the true nature of that spell, and it's indeed terrifying. It not only puts the person to sleep but also erases most of their memories, depending on the duration of sleep. According to Ciel's calculations, if I wake up now, I'd retain essential memories, but the details might be scrambled.)
As soon as they let me down, I pretended to wake up, feigning grogginess. I glanced around with a sleepy expression while the man stared back at me, bewildered. They seemed to be communicating telepathically, discussing our next steps. I decided to play along. "Mister, where am I now?" I asked, my voice tinged with fear.
"Ah, you're finally awake. You were unconscious, so we brought you here," they said with insincere smiles. I put on a thoughtful pose and murmured, "Could I have lost too much magical energy? What happened before I fell?" They exchanged uneasy glances before responding, "You took a hard knock to the head when you fell. Can you tell us what you remember?"
I continued to act, adopting a thinking pose once more. (This is actually quite enjoyable.)
"My name is Rimuru Tempest. I'm a magician skilled in all elemental magic. I have a katana from my deceased parents and a magical necklace. Wait, why can't I remember anything else, like my home or what I did before?!" I feigned panic.
"Don't worry; we'll help you remember everything you've forgotten," one of them said, trying to calm me down. I stopped my act but maintained a frightened look, nodding in response.
"We took you in after your parents died. You wanted to show us your magical skills but overused your magic and fell unconscious," he fabricated the story.
I looked at him with a grateful smile. "Thank you for taking care of me. I'm sorry for the trouble I caused." I glanced around, tears forming in my eyes. "Where is my katana? It's all I have left. Please give it back!" I began to throw a tantrum, casting minor spells of various types.
One of them tried to subdue me with a spell, but I didn't pretend to be affected this time. I continued my act of distress until I spotted my katana. Rushing over, I grabbed it, drew it from its sheath, and inspected it before sheathing it again.
Turning back to the man who spoke to me, I acted as if I had just remembered our conversation. With a sweet smile, I asked, "Sorry, mister, but I seem to have forgotten your name. Could you remind me?"
He seemed to revel in my apparent confusion. "You don't remember me? I'm John Dee. I promise to make you one of the most powerful wizards in the land."
{Notice: John Dee appears to have Future Sight, which lets him see potential future events and your possible outcomes. However, it's more of a vision than an active ability.} (That could be quite useful, though it has limitations.)
"Can I leave now, or is there something else I need to wait for?" I asked, sensing his satisfaction with the situation.
"Let me give you a tour of the facility," he offered. (He's not even denying it's not a school anymore. I can only imagine his reaction when I teleport away again.) He gestured for me to follow, and I walked beside him.
The facility resembled a school with a large lab, likely used for experiments. I wasn't particularly interested in John Dee and took the opportunity to observe my surroundings. At one point, Ciel spoke up.
{Notice a child with the Infinity ability to your right.} I looked in the direction indicated and saw a young girl engrossed in her magical research.
Her eyes were familiar—intense, driven by a quest to fill a personal void. She was more powerful than any magician I had encountered here. I considered teleporting to her to see what she was capable of.
I smiled at her and followed John Dee back to the room where I had woken up. I sensed malicious intent from him. In my childlike voice, I said, "Thank you for the tour, Mister. I'd like to explore on my own now. I'll come to you if I need anything." Sensing I was about to leave, John Dee attempted to grab my arm. (Does he ever learn?)
I quickly moved aside, kicked his ankle to cause a momentary pause due to pain, and used "Return" to escape from him. I teleported to the location where I had seen the girl. As expected, she was still there. She noticed the magical distortion and looked up as I approached.
"Hey, I'm Rimuru Tempest. What's your name?" I asked in a friendly tone, dropping my childish act.
"I'm Merlin. What do you want from me?" she asked cautiously. I laughed lightly.
"You don't need to be so serious. I'm just curious about what you're researching. You seemed like someone with a lot of knowledge, and I thought it would be interesting to learn from you."
Merlin struck a thoughtful pose. "Why are you acting like a child? You're different from the other kids here." (She's perceptive.)
Adopting a serious stance, I explained, "When those men who took me from the street gave me a tour, I tricked them into believing their magic affected me. I saw you and became interested. When they were about to do something I didn't like, I teleported away to you. I could leave, but I want to learn more about magic and world history before I go."
(I don't think Merlin will try to hinder me, so revealing this isn't a problem.) "I understand. So, you want to learn more about magic and the world too. How did you get involved with the other wizards? You don't seem like a typical child from here," she asked.
"Well, I have the ability to use magic from all races," I said, demonstrating by producing a small demon energy bubble, a holy light, and a fairy energy ball. She watched with intense interest, and I felt a twinge of nervousness.
"I put on a show and pretended to be caught by a powerful spell that affects the mind, but I'm immune to such things. I know you have the Infinity ability; I can sense it," I added.
"I have a proposal: let's study magic and the world together and be friends. What do you say?" I extended my hand to her with a warm smile. Merlin looked surprised but took my hand and shook it.
"I look forward to studying with you," she agreed.
Authors Note:
Hey I hope you had fun with this chapter. For those who don't know, John Dee is a reference to the great wizard John Dee who was famous for combining astronomy with magic.
