Merlin's POV:
I have been studying the data Rimuru provides for a while now, and I still can't figure out how she manages to wield multiple types of magical power. It should be impossible for any race to possess more than one type of magical power source. Even the extinct Shifters needed to change forms to harness different types of power. If I want answers to this question and many others, I'll have to wait until later today to ask her because she has been training with the staff here.
I still can't believe she hasn't been discovered yet regarding her ability to remove that collar. Considering she needs to bypass the system to teleport, it's logical she could just teleport without it. She gave them the clues on a silver platter, but they are too blinded by their own desires to notice. Even if she could only teleport herself and not other things, I can think of multiple ways to avoid the collar.
When I finally resolved to focus on my studies again, a familiar sight appeared before my eyes as Rimuru materialized in front of me. She smiled and waved. "You are early today," I said indifferently. To be honest, I didn't expect to see her at all, but it's nice to see her. Maybe I could get some answers to my questions later.
"It's also good to see you again. What are you doing today?" she asked as she sat next to me, her eyes glinting with curiosity.
"I was just thinking about you," I admitted honestly. "I still can't figure you out even after all this time." Her face showed surprise, quickly replaced by a bright smile.
"I didn't think you cared that much about me, that I come to mind without it being part of a new experiment. So, what do you want to know? I have all the time in the world, and the staff won't bother us anytime soon—I made sure of that."
She said this with a cheerful tone, but her words carried an undertone that didn't match her demeanor. This was my chance to get answers to the questions she often sidestepped during our conversations.
"Any questions I have?" I asked, trying to gauge what to expect from this conversation with my study partner.
Rimuru seemed to consider my question carefully, clearly recognizing its implications. After a moment, she made up her mind. "I will answer any question that doesn't put the people I care about in danger. Also, I will only answer those questions within a soundproof barrier because I don't want them overheard."
She gestured toward the others around us. This request was reasonable, as we would likely discuss sensitive topics. Her mention of other people she cares about also opened new avenues for inquiry.
"That's not a problem. I can maintain a soundproof barrier while we talk," I said, casting the barrier around us. I looked at her again.
Rimuru inspected the barrier, then turned back to me. "Okay, you can ask your questions, but before you do, I need to tell you some things I've been hiding from you for a long time." Her tone was unusually serious, a stark contrast to her normal demeanor. I hadn't expected this. If she was bringing this up before I even asked anything, it must be truly significant.
"The books you're studying here are falsified by the authors to hide the truth from outsiders like yourself. I have also been deceptive about myself since I came here, so it's only logical you haven't been able to figure me out. But I want to make it up to you by answering all your questions honestly," she said with a sad smile.
A chill ran down my spine. The realization that the books I relied on were fabrications was startling. This new truth shook the foundation of everything I thought I knew. I struggled to process the magnitude of this revelation, feeling a mix of awe and frustration.
"So what is real?" I asked with a straight face. Rimuru seemed to ponder this for a few seconds before answering.
"I really did find you interesting when we first met, and all the abilities I told you I have aren't made up. However, not all of them are as limited as I led you to believe. My desire to learn is also genuine, though not exactly what I let you think," she explained.
She was essentially telling me that my understanding was either incomplete or entirely incorrect. This was going to be more challenging than I initially expected.
"So how can you use multiple different sources of racial magical energy?" I asked, sticking with the question that had long intrigued me. Rimuru seemed to anticipate this question, responding immediately.
"To answer that question, I first need to clear up some misconceptions you might have from the books you've read. My ability to use multiple types of racial magic is a racial trait I possess. As far as I know, I am the last Shifter with a physical form in the world. Shifters have the ability to use different types of magic, but they have a unique form that allows them to use human, demon, and goddess energy simultaneously, which is the human form. However, this form is weaker compared to the other forms.
For fairy magic, I can still change to my fairy form without anyone seeing it since I haven't yet obtained my true fairy form. I can levitate and use fairy magic in that form, but it's not powerful enough to be used frequently," she informed me.
I was now learning about Shifters not from the stories I had studied for years, but from the real thing. This was a fascinating discovery. I had to seize this opportunity to learn more.
"So can you tell me more about your race?" I asked, now more eager than before. "Where do you want me to start? The history or the general racial information?" Rimuru asked, likely unsure of where to begin.
"The racial information would be the best way to start," I decided.
Rimuru nodded and began explaining. "Shifters are specialized to adapt to their surroundings. This was a misunderstood fact even among Shifters themselves. Most people think they can only change appearance to mimic other races, but the reality is that Shifters can obtain any magic or techniques they can conceive, as long as they meet the right conditions. To make Shifters less dangerous, they are pessimistic by nature, making them less likely to optimize their full potential. There are forms that resemble all races, but due to the nature of Shifters, each form is unique even if they look the same.
Shifters are also genderless and align with the general opinions of others on that matter. Their appearance reflects their personality and personal qualities. They can alter their appearance to suit their needs to a certain extent.
Most notably, Shifters can change their age, as they don't have a limited lifespan. However, their most recognizable features, like my hair and eyes, remain constant.
In addition to their physical form, Shifters have a spiritual form called their true form. We enter this form if we are supposed to be killed and can't be seen by any living being. Only our deity can return us to our physical form, but since she has been missing from the world for so long, I am the only physical Shifter that exists.
Shifters can't have children with other Shifters. If we want children, we need to partner with another race, and the child will take on the race of the partner. Shifters can only be created by our deity, but she refuses to do so. Once created or recreated, we start with nothing but an unnoticeable entity resembling the most noticeable traits of a person. For example, I was a blue-silver droplet with golden eyes before I saw a human
Authors note:
Hey readers I know that this might not be the best place to stop the story but I decided that it would be best to make multiple parts of this as it will be really long and I won't be able to stop at a great place any time soon. I hope you enjoyed reading this and I hope to share more with you soon.
