Meliodas's POV:

(Well, that was close. If not for the fact that Rimuru ironically had been predicting what Zeldris would ask about the encounter, it would not have been possible to get him to go away without revealing more than I liked. But for Rimuru to anticipate that much of what we do... I guess I should be thankful that Rimuru is my girlfriend and not my enemy. The best choice of my life was not saying anything about Rimuru when we first met. I wonder if Rimuru would have won.)

Now I have to report to the Demon King. Fooling Zeldris is one thing—I have to admit that he's easily triggered by provocation. But what about the Demon King? When I think of him, he always looks down upon us and has a big ego. I think I am starting to think like Rimuru. Who am I fooling? I am not even close to her level. Well, let's go for the next round and fool the Demon King.

"You have finally returned. Now, speak. What have you discovered about the girl?" His voice cut through the air, leaving no room for hesitation. As always, defiance was not an option—at least, that was the case until now.

"I am back. About Rimuru, I am not sure what is true for certain, but even if only part of this is true, she is a very strong and cunning woman. She claims to have the power to copy any magic, fighting techniques—the whole thing. She also claims to know all about her surroundings just by looking at them. She is really good at leading the conversation with the information she wants you to know. This has some truth to it, but how far it really goes, I'm not convinced. Ask Zeldris—he should be able to verify the information I told you. But did you know she doesn't care about royal status and hasn't anyone she knows that well?

She even used me. She knew I would report back to you and told me to give you a message. Even the message I got from her indicates that she doesn't care about it. Letting me be her messenger because I report to you shows she has guts. Want to hear what she has to say?" I asked him.

"Continue. Relay every word she told you," he commanded with an icy glare that brooked no delay.

"Hey Demon King, if you want to know what happened, just ask people. I didn't invite you on my day off, so ask about it afterward, but don't irritate me on my day off." That's the message. She really wasn't happy about that," I said.

"Where were you all day? Your presence vanished completely from this world," the Demon King demanded, his eyes narrowing suspiciously.

"So even you cannot sense her presence. That is a scary ability. But coming back to your question, we were in her house. I don't know where because we never left the house. She told me that everything inside her house couldn't be monitored, so I could talk casually without having to worry about other people hearing," I answered.

"You seem to have established a positive impression of yourself to her. Good. Maintain this facade of a relationship so that she remains useful to us," he decreed, his tone leaving no doubt that this was an order, not a suggestion.

After making sure my true feelings didn't show, I asked, "Why are you so fixated on gaining her approval? You've never done this before."

His irritation was palpable as he responded, "She defies any command I might give because she fears no repercussions. Her power is immense—she could surpass most of the Commandments without any of their strengths. She's too cunning to be ensnared by traps. If we are to harness her power, she must come to us willingly. Your report has only confirmed my strategy. Understand this, my son: you are the key to securing our victory in the coming war. Do not fail me," he pronounced, his words a final, unyielding edict. (I realized then that he plans to use me to manipulate her. Unfortunately for him, our victory is already assured.)
