Twenty-A child

Virgil was walking around outside the castle. Him and Roman had been reigning as kings for about a year now. They hadn't received much backlash about having gay kings, most people were scared about an heir to the throne. The couple had been considering adoption for a few months but neither had brought it up for a few weeks.

As Virgil was walking, he heard something. It was quiet and he didn't quite recognize it. He looked around before following after the sound. He started to feel nervous and he looked over at a guard. He has gotten familiar with most guards and could call most of them by name.

"Duncan?" Virgil called out walking up to him. The guard fixed his feet and bowed to Virgil. "Yes, your majesty?" He asked. "Would you accompany me to find the source of this sound?" The sound never stopped and Virgil couldn't place what it was. Duncan took a second to listen before nodding, "Of course, your majesty."

Duncan lead the way as they searched. "Forgive me, your majesty, but if I am not mistaken, that sounds like an infant fussing." Virgil gave Duncan an odd look. An infant? On royal grounds?

Duncan stuttered some, "I grew up with multiple younger siblings, I'm quite familiar with sounds babies make." Virgil nodded looking thoughtful, "I've never been around any children before so I wouldn't know. But how would one get on royal grounds?" Duncan shrugged and they continued to search.

Soon, they stumbled upon a basket. Duncan put his arm out in front of Virgil and placed his hand on hilt as he approached the basket. Duncan gasped and looked back at Virgil. "Your majesty," He breathed causing Virgil to rushed over. Virgil gasped looking into the basket. Inside was an infant. A little tiny baby wrapped up in a white blanket.

Laid on top of the baby's blanket was a note. Virgil picked the note up and read it aloud. "My unnamed baby is too much for me to take care of. I am too poor and too young for a child, I had the child out of wedlock and no one knows I was pregnant. I know the royals will take good care of my baby and I put my full trust into them. Please take good care of my baby." Virgil was honestly speechless. He looked up at Duncan, "We have to get the baby to Roman." Virgil picked the basket and carried it was careful hands. The basket didn't have handles so he doing his best not to drop it.

Duncan stayed with Virgil, on guard just in case this was a trap. He opened a door Virgil and made sure was safe in the castle before returning to his post. Not how he thought his day would go.

"Roman!" Virgil called out walking quickly. Roman was in the study and panic washed over him as Virgil never called him by his full name. He got up quickly, not his chair over as he ran out of the study meeting Virgil in the hall. "What!?" He gasped, he somehow didn't notice the basket in Virgil's hands, he was too busy searching for injuries.

Virgil smiled at his husband's concern. He looked at Roman then down at the basket in his hands. Roman eyes grew wide as he stared at the baby and the note. "W-Where did you- A baby?" Roman sputtered. "Me and the guard Duncan found it outside on the grounds." Virgil informed, but the information didn't help Roman's confusion.

Roman cracked a small smile, "So we're dads now?" Virgil smiled brightly at Roman, "Really? We can keep it?" Roman chuckled some at his excited husband, "Yeah, baby, we can. Is it a girl or boy?" Roman asked causing Virgil to shrug. "I dunno, I haven't taken it out of the basket." Roman nodded and lead Virgil back to their bedroom.

Virgil laid the basket on their bed. Roman carefully picked the baby up and out of the basket. He undid the swaddle the baby. Roman felt a loving smile appear on his face, it was a baby girl. "It's a girl?" Virgil asked quietly to which Roman nodded and brought Virgil close. "What are gunna name her?" Roman asked.

Virgil studied the baby for a moment. "Ainslie," Virgil finally said, "Ainslie Jane," Roman smiled, "Little baby Ainslie Jane, I like that." Virgil smiled and hugged Roman. "We're parents, Ro!" Roman laughed and kissed Virgil, "I know!" The couple shared another kiss, they were happy. Until the baby started crying and they started to panic.
