Mock comes flying over to my side instantly when he sees me. He looks around my whole body is if seeing if I'm hurt anywhere. "Aww, you care for me," I tease which causes him to go cold again. I lean against his chest as we watch as Hiccup and Toothless gain altitude before dive bombing the big dragon again. "He's trying to get it to follow him," I say realizing what's going on." Mock gurgles out as if agreeing with me. Why though I wonder.
"Freya!" I turn when I hear Astrid call me. She jumps off of Stronfly, her deadly nadder, before charging over to me and jumping me. "I thought you were going to die," she hold me tight and I can barely breathe. This is easily one of our first hugs in the last 5 years and I make sure to enjoy it in case it's the last for a while. "Me too but Toothless got me," I comfort while pulling away. "I'm all good, I promise."
She holds one arm around me as we watch Toothless dive down and shoot the dragon. The impact is so hard I feel like the sound alone could knock me over. It hits the big dragon so hard it knocks her over. She lands with a big thud shaking the beach all around us. To stop myself from falling down with Astrid I have to grab hold of Mockfire. "Shit that must have hurt," I mumble to myself as the dragon slowly starts to sit up. She's definitely mad.
She starts to open wings that I hadn't noticed. Her wing span is easily the size of 8 ships from bow to stern. "You think she can fly with them? They look small compared to her body," I ask Astrid who's too transfixed on the dragon to answer. I'm about to ask Fishlegs who's come to stand by us but the dragons feet start to lift and I'm corrected. It takes a few big flaps but soon she's flying after Hiccup and Toothless at full speed.
We watch as they fly infront of us over the water. Toothless is diving dodging all the sea stacks as she just tears right through them. The other teens make their way over as we all get closer to the water for a better view. "Woohooo!" The twins cheer when Toothless turns quickly out of the path of the big beast. I turn to my side surprised to see the Chief watching in aw as his son completely beats the giant dragon. Something him and all the rest of the adults failed at.
They do another lap around the water before Toothless starts to gain altitude. She slowly starts to get closer and closer to him with every big flap. "Damn," I curse once they go fully into the clouds knowing we won't know what happens if something goes wrong. Multiple times the clouds light up with fire from her and pray to the gods that they're fine. Astrid grabs my hand and I can tell she's nervous too. I squeeze it tight while not letting my eyes leave the clouds hoping I'll catch a glimpse of them or at least see Toothlesses purple fire.
My prayers are answered when the sky lights up in purple and we can faintly see the outline of her. Her roar and growls echo in my bones as my free hand fiddles with the strap on my sheaf. Every time something happens the crowd reacts verbally to it. If it's not an ahh then it's an oooo, except for the twins. Their reaction are random and never seem to be the right one compared to everyone else. I'm slightly confused as to who they're cheering for.
The sky lights up with more flames than it has so far and I worry that they're caught in it. Astrid starts to pray under her breath and I squeeze my hand. "They'll make it," I say more for myself than her. "Look!" Someone screams as they break free from the cloud coverage. Hiccup and toothless are facing the dragon as they fall, firing shots into her mouth. She's diving down head first way too fast and we all realize she's not gonna be able to pull up in time.
Fire is burning from her mouth as she collides with the far side of the beach headfirst. The explosion pushes everyone back and if it wasn't for Mockfire then I would have tumbles down. He holds his grounds for me and Astrid to lead against while putting his wing in front of us. Stormfly cries out in fear along with most of everyone. As soon as the blast pressure is gone I look back and I'm just I time to see Hiccup fall into the flame with Toothless diving after him. "No!" I scream at the same time as Astrid.
I feel myself try and run towards the flames but a hand stops me. I expect it to be Astrid but it's the Chiefs. I've only talked to him once or twice in my whole life and it was when I was getting awards for something. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't even know my first name. He pulls me back with a shake of his head. I want to fight him but I know he's right. We can't do anything till the flames go out.
It takes a while for the flames to start to die down. There's a lot of dragon flesh that has to burn and the smell is repulsing. I can tell Mock dislikes it even more than I do but he stays by my side. I'm as close as the will let me be and he's right by my side. "We can go," Astrid lets me know as I stand not sure what to do now. I've been waiting a while for this moment but now I feel shy and awkward. "Okay," I nod trying to act tough and not how I feel.
Stoick is already heading over to the big dragon with a crowd following him a few yards behind. Soon everyone is heading over to help look for the Chiefs son. The teens are near the head of the crowd calling for him. A voice says inside of me that dead men don't talk and I try my best to shove the voice far away. "Do you smell him?" I ask Mock but he shake his head. The burning flash is much to strong. "It's okay," I give his shoulder a pat before I head into a different direction from the others.
I think I see Toothless like half a dozen times and it ends up being part of the big dragon piece or just a rock. "Toothless!" I call hoping his awesome hearing will hear me. "Hiccup?" I try him next. I get no answer and I feel my stomach sink once again. At this rate it's going to leave my body. "Hiccup!" I hear the Chief yell and the way he says it makes me turn. He says it more like a plea than a calling. The large man runs towards something before falling to his knees in front of it. "Shit," I whisper knowing this means he's found them. "No," I cry out angry. "Did he?" Snotlout asks as he comes over and stands by me. Astrid stands in the other side and I see tears in her eyes.
The way the Chief is turned blocks most of the view from us but I can see Toothless's body sprawled out. The silence is louder than any roar the big dragon could have made. A growl breaks that silence and I watch Toothless pick his head up slowly trying to focus on one thing. He lets out a low moan before opening his wings. I imagine a clam opening up and showing of its pearl, only to the Chief this is much more valuable than any Pearl or Ruby.
"Hiccup!" The Chief yells and I feel my heart in my throat pounding. Stoick removes his helmet to hear for a heartbeat. The crowd goes silence once again as we wait for the news. "He's alive!" He laughs out and I feel my heart stop. "You brought him back alive!" His voice cracks and I feel a smile come to my lips. I look behind me to Mock who spears to be smiling in his own way but stops when he sees me looking.
Someone starts the cheer and more quickly follow suit. It only takes seconds for the who crowd to be celebrating the survival of the boy they only months ago despised. It's ironic that what was thought to be the downfall of Berk ended up saving it. Astrid squeezed my hand before letting it go to clap. Even the dragons growl out celebratory sounds. Change is in the air.
