"Put your backs into it!" Gobber shouts to the seven of us as we row. "You lazy dogs!" He curses and I watch my knuckles turn white from my anger. "You're not even trying!" This sets me off and I move to stand but Hiccup grabs my arm. "Okay, I think what Gobber means is he's excited to find this dragon," Hiccup explains in a calming voice. I glare down at his hand and he lets it go instantly. "Yeah his real dragon," I choke out before sitting back down on my wet, hard bench.
"Let's think on the positive side, we got the team back together, another adventure. This is pretty cool, huh?" The twig boy asks slightly slowing his rowing to turn and face the rest of us. He looks back across the isle to me and I flip him off. "Yep, nothing cooler than rowing until your hands bleed!" Snotlout spits out causing the twins to laugh.
"Remind me again why we couldn't just, I don't know, fly?" Astrid asks and I can sense her anger starting to show. "We don't want to scare the dragon away, besides we're Vikings!" Hiccup explains with enthusiasm and I can see Gobber nod along. "You kids need to learn the fun of rowing, living out of a small boat on only fish and water. This is bonding," he explains while waving his hook around. He's been sitting at the front of the boat this whole time not helping in any way.
I grumble curses under my breath that make Hiccup shush me. Gobber must not have heard cause he continues talking. "It warms my hearts that you kids want to help me get my revenge. True Vikings you are," the slimy man starts to tear up which makes me roll my eyes. I've always liked Gobber but if he's the reason I die alone in the middle of the ocean then I will haunt his ass so hard in Valhalla.
"Gobber are we there yet?" Ruff asks. The twins have gotten less and less excited the more they've gotten tired. "Oh, you'll know you're close when your ear explode from the piercing screams," Fishlegs answers instead of the older man. "Legend says this dragons roar is so fierce, it can melt the flesh right of your bones," the large boy is smiling wildly at the rest of us. I watch Hiccup turn back around to back Gobber clearly concerned and worried. "Yeah, let's go help Gobber, we owe it to the man," I mock his arguments from earlier and he winces clearly regretting his plan now.
"Not quite so, Fishlegs," Gobber speaks up and I pray he's not about to say something how the bonenapper can do something even worse. "The bonenapper has no roar at all, that's why he's terrifying! He's a silent killer!" And my worried are confirmed, this fake dragon just got more terrifying. "Wait so if we don't hear anything, we're dead?" Ruff asks as she stops rowing. We all follow her lead and listen. I look out along the horizon to see if I see anything.
"I don't hear anything," Tuff realizes out loud. We all breathe quietly as Phill bahhhs out breaking the silences. I feel my hands go to grab my dagger as everyone screams. "No!" Gobber yells as he grabs my dagger and throws it down to the bottom of the boat. "Hey!" I glare back to the sheep as I reach for my discarded dagger. "Lamb chops are my favorite," I smile back to the fluffy animal who looks more scared now than when we all screamed at him.
"Okay, Freya let's get back to rowing. Don't worry Phill, I won't let the mean teen touch you," Gobber baby talks to his sheep which causes me to scrunch my nose disgustedly. "Oh Odin, please help me," I pray the same time I hear Astrid. I try a round to face her and she has a small smile having heard me also pray the same thing. I give her a polite smile before facing forward. "Bonding, already," Tuff teased and I flip him off with an eye roll. "We grew up together dumbo."
"Did I ever tell you about the first time I ever met the dreaded bonenapper?" Gobber asks us before I can hurl anymore insults around. Out of the corner of my eye I see Snotlout and Fishlegs shake their heads. "Well," Gobber starts by pulling up his pants as he stands form the barrel he was sitting on. "I was a young lad, around your age, on summer vacation with my family," Gobber looks out onto the horizon dramatics and I roll my eyes. "When u heard the call of nature," I scrunch my nose up knowing what he means.
"But I came across an army of Vikings!" The man randomly shouts, startling us all. "They were frozen in battle, all hundreds of them." Gobber is using his hands to describe the image to us but it all appears to be gibberish and random. "Then I noticed that one Viking was holding a small treasure chest, I knew in that moment I had to have it. So I cracked the ice with my ax until I was able to grab the small chest," Gobber pretends to hit a wall of ice with his hook dramatically. I turn in my seat to see the reaction of the teens behind me but they all seem to be entranced by the story.
"I opened it and it was the most beautiful things I ever saw. But the frozen Viking that I took the chest from was alive. He started punching me with my own fist! And then there he was. Never even heard the beast coming. I dogged and it flew into the glacier, which cracked the ice and sent an avalanche of frozen Vikings!" This is when I notice most of everyone else stop gawking. Everyone minus the twins that is.
"I ran for my life, I had to dodge frozen Vikings and the claws of the boney beast! I dropped the treasure and it slid into the water. I was just quick enough to grab it but then the Frozen Viking started punching me in the again!" Gobber pretends to punch himself in the face. He doesn't realize that we've all lost interest in his clearly fake story.
"The dragon landed on the ice which sent me flying! He tries to get me but I slipped through a crack in the ice and went sailing through the air back to where my families boat was," the old man starts laughing as if remembering something in the story he's not telling us about. "You expect us to believe that you just landed back on your families ship?" Snotlout asks and I roll my eyes. "Yeah because that's the most unbelievable part of his story!" Gobber smiles giddily not realizing my comment was sarcastic. "Yeah!"
"Hey," Hiccup stops us from complaining any more. "It could happen." But this sets Gobber off. "What do you mean it could happen? It did happen. But I outsmarted the silent beast," Gobber points to himself proudly and I feel myself scoot back in my seat when he gets too close. "Hey Gobber?" Fishlegs raises his hands and we all turn to face him. "I hate to be a stickler for rules but-" he sits straighter up in his seat, "bonenappers are not silent." I pinch the bridge of my noise annoyed that everyone seems to feeding into this poor man's delusions.
"Fishlegs!" He yells out exasperated. "I know what I didn't hear. I could feel the shivers run all around the back of my neck though. It was like he was trying to steal my own bones. Worst thing I've ever-" the ship lurches to a stop abruptly and we all go flying forward slightly. I grip the side of the ship so I don't face plant onto the smelly man standing infront of me. "What the fuck!" I ask turning around to see what we hit. "I'm tasting rocks," Astrid announces as she looks overboard the ship. I look over and see the sharp dagger like rocks sticking up all around us. How we didn't notice them is beyond me.
"We're hear!" Gobber says with a smile and I groan out. "You don't know that. The chances we crash onto the exact place that the bonenapper is, is so unlikely. You all realize we're going to die because Hiccup made us come," I argue and I get a palm to the face from Gobbler and an eye roll from Hiccup. "Let's go!" Gobber jumps over the boat and lands into the thigh high water. Hiccup is the first to follow him with the twins going next. I watch Astrid with weary eyes as we hop into the dark water. "If I get bitten by an eel, I swear to the gods," I mumble under my breath.
