Y/n was balled up on her bed, the unsatisfactory smell of her own bedsheets infiltrating her nostrils.
It's not like they smelled bad or something. They just weren't Tsukishima's.
She closed her eyes, and the events of a couple of weeks ago replayed in her mind.
"It doesn't mean anything." Tsukishima said.
Yeah, all those days going to his house and growing closer didn't mean anything.
Spending time together didn't mean anything.
Being comforted with a back rub and being embraced in his arms didn't mean anything.
And here she was, sulking in bed over her crush not reciprocating her feelings. Had she even asked?
No.
But there was no need to anymore, with Tsukishima already blatantly rejecting her without her needing to say anything in the first place.
She wrapped herself tightly in the blanket and opened her eyes to the darkness of her room, staring at nothing in particular for several minutes.
Maybe she needed a small change of pace.
Unravelling herself from the sheets, she reached for the phone on the nightstand. The bright screen stung her eyes, which had already adjusted to the dark, and she hissed. She squeezed her eyes once and then continued on her mission, dialing the number of someone she hadn't seen in a while.
...
The other line picked up.
"Y/n? Why are you calling so late?"
"Sorry... can I come over in a couple days?"
Grumpy.
Cold.
Moody.
Tsukishima thought of all the possible words that could describe y/n's behavior these past couple days. He grunted softly, thinking about how her sudden change of demeanor really only was towards himself, not his brother or mother.
Did he do something wrong? Why was she acting so closed off all of a sudden?
Y/n was making excuses to not come over to his house, or if she did, she would leave very early-- maybe after staying three hours or less. Whenever he flicked her forehead, she would always bashfully smile, or laugh, which is why he did it in the first place. However, these days, the forehead flicks only got him an annoyed look or curled lip in return.
Tsukishima tapped the pencil he was holding onto his temple repeatedly.
He could almost laugh at the turn of events, but it troubled him too much to do so.
She was acting strange. Right after they had cleared up that misunderstanding between her not having a boyfriend, too. The act of her being distant almost felt like some kind of cruel joke, that it was payback or something for what he had done to her. But his gut was telling him that it wasn't simply some sort of act of revenge.
Could... his brother's words really have set her off that much?
Tsukishima suddenly stood from his desk and stormed into his older brother's room. Akiteru turned around from where he sat, also at his desk. "What's up?"
