Chapter Twenty-Two

"This isn't a hangover—this is what death feels like."

Marie laughed as I pulled my hair up into a messy ponytail—slowly laying up from the bed despite my aching head.

"Don't tell me it's past ten," I mumbled, my words coming out in a groan as I processed her bright bedroom.

Marie pursed her lips, glancing up from her phone as she said, "It's past ten..."

I let out a dramatic sigh, falling back into the bed with a groan, "You should've set an alarm or something," I said, rolling onto my side to face her.

Marie only shrugged, "I never set alarms on the weekend—and besides, you never spared any details about setting an alarm," she pointed out with a raised brow, "You were quite literally confessing your love to a box of tacos."

I chuckled slightly as I recalled hunching over Marie's counter, nearly kissing the tacos before eating them.

Sometimes food is so good that I literally talk myself through eating it—so those tacos must've been really fucking good.

I don't really remember honestly.

I let out a long sigh, childishly kicking my feet before forcing myself to lay up from the bed, "I have brunch—Tazmin is picking me up at eleven and it's..." I suddenly tapped my charging phone on the nightstand, "Ten fifteen," I sighed, determining I probably wouldn't get home until at least ten thirty.

"Wait, brunch? Tazmin?" Marie said, her brows furrowing as she looked at me, "Fill me in right now."

I pursed my lips, "There's nothing really to fill you in on," I determined, brushing the seriousness of the topic off, "Tazmin's older sister just invited me to her brunch," I casually explained, swinging my legs to the side of Marie's large bed.

But I couldn't miss the way Marie's brows raised, a shocked look filtering in on her face.

"You met her family? What's her sister like? Does she run with them too?" Marie suddenly asked, the questions nearly spilling from her lips and somehow making my headache grow worse.

I let out a tight hum as I stood to my feet, ignoring the cold tile that seemed to shoot uncomfortable chills up my spine.

"You're saying too much for me to keep up with," I determined, grabbing my phone from the nightstand, "But her sister is weirdly normal," I added, somehow remembering that part of her question.

Marie smiled slightly, "And you say it's just sex," she mumbled, giving me a knowing brow raise.

Which seemed to earn an eye roll from me, "It is. None of this was purposefully planned—her sister just insisted," I explained, knowing I wouldn't be going otherwise.

Marie only hummed, "Sure..." she trailed off, nuzzling deeper into her bed, where I desperately wanted to remain for the rest of the day, "Well, you better get your shit together and look less hungover," she reminded me.
