Case File Name:
Silence.

Chapter Twenty-Six

The next morning came early, mostly because I couldn't sleep.

I just laid under my covers, bundled in a sweatshirt and sweatpants with my dark hair tied up.

I didn't shed another tear again over the situation.

I just remained still, blankly staring at the ceiling until I couldn't bother another second of the heavy silence—and I grabbed my phone.

First I answered Marie and then I reached out to Ivanna to reschedule the event held tonight to celebrate that I made partner.

Then I ended up scrolling on TikTok.

An app which I seemed to stay on from the early hours of four in the morning—to around mid-day.

When a knock sounded at my door.

And as soon as I checked the peephole, I was remaining completely still.

And so silent that you could hear a pin drop before you heard my breathing.

"Milena I already know you're in there."

I drew in a deep breath, carefully retreating away from the door.

She doesn't actually know I'm in here.

Especially because I told her I was at Morana's for the rest of the weekend.

"I had Mav stop by your sister's place," she spoke again.

But I still remained silent, determining that she'd go away eventually.

Or I wouldn't come out.

"Did you get your locks fixed?"

I briefly squeezed my eyes shut, determining that she wouldn't go away and that I couldn't hide in here.

Because she would come in.

"I don't want company right now," I finally forced out, my voice coating the air after hours of remaining mute.

"Just let me see you," I heard Tazmin say, unsurprisingly standing her ground, "I need to see that you're good."

I drew in a deep breath, hating that her words struck me deeper.

It made my throat close up and the familiar tears burn in my eyes.

But I only blinked them away—quickly adjusting the baggy sweats that I wore before approaching the door.

And as soon as I pulled it open, my eyes met hers after days of being apart.

She looked just the same in her typical loose t-shirt and baggy jeans—with her light hair cascading down her back and shoulders.

Except this time there was one thing different about her.

And it was the way she was looking at me.
