Chapter One

"That one looks like a heart."

I glanced over where her tiny hand pointed to, my eyes scanning the stars projected onto the tall ceiling.

I hummed, "That one?" I pointed up beside her hand.

Nadia let out one of her dramatic sighs, that sounded more adorable than offensive, "No, right here," she said, her soft voice weighed down by her tiredness.

A slow smile grew on my lips, "Okay honey," I teasingly nudged her.

Nadia rolled her eyes, "Okay bee," she nudged her tiny body into mine before resting her head on my chest.

I let out a content sigh, "Tired?" I murmured, playing with her long soft hair.

Nadia only hummed, "Not if you're leaving," she whispered, wrapping her small arms around me.

I smiled slightly, "I'm taking you to daycare tomorrow Nadi," I reminded her.

But she only held me tighter, "Stay the night," she said, suddenly turning her head to give me her usual softened look of pleading, "Please Mel?"

I sighed, "You know I have to meet Marie," I whispered, which seemed to make the little girl's lips form into a pout.

"I'm tired of her stealing you away. She's had you for years," Nadia argued.

I laughed, "You've had me for seven," I said with a smile, lightly poking her cheeks.

Nadia blinked blankly, "Seven years where I shared you," she mumbled, which seemed to earn more laughs from me.

But before I could say anything in response, the door to Nadia's bedroom gently cracked open and a small wave of warm light flooded into the room.

"Nadi, it's time for bed," my sister's familiar voice spoke into the room, softened under the quietness.

Nadia let out a dramatic sigh when I laid up from her bed.

"I'll see you tomorrow," I shot her a smile as I leaned in to press a kiss to her forehead, "I love you."

Nadia pecked my cheek, "I love you too," she said back, smiling slightly, "Bring me my favorite gummies tomorrow?" she whispered, so Morana couldn't hear her.

My smile grew, "Of course honey," I whispered back.

Nadia hummed contently, "Thanks bee," she mumbled, growing more comfortable in her bed that I was now standing from.

And within a few minutes, I was out of the room with my sister—heading into the kitchen where her husband just finished cleaning up after dinner.

"Your falafels were better tonight," I told Zane as I settled at the large kitchen island with my sister.

It felt like everything in my sister's life was perfect—the perfect husband who not only provides for them financially but cooks and cleans too, the most beautiful daughter, and then the typical suburban house with more bedrooms than they needed.

It was everything our parents would've wanted for us.

Everything I ever wanted for my sister.

Me on the other hand...

I'm too career-focused to even think about having a life like hers.

"Really? I tried a different technique tonight," Zane said, smiling happily as he wiped his hands on the dish towel.
