Chapter Twenty-Five

Everything felt quieter.

It felt normal without Tazmin stopping by the firm to insist we go shopping or to lunch.

Or without her randomly texting and telling me to come over.

It was a weird adjustment on Monday, but after a few days, I grew used to it.

Even if I found myself checking my phone for a text.

Or a call.

But it's been radio silent on both ends.

"And how has your day been?" Marie asked as she sat across from me in the booth at the restaurant we stopped at for lunch.

I shrugged as I glanced over the menu, "Regular," I determined, which seemed to make Marie tilt her head.

"And..." she trailed off, clearly wanting to know more.

But there wasn't anything more—it really was just regular.

Just cases and meetings, the same as every other day.

"Just regular," I repeated myself with a sigh, not bothering to meet my best friend's stare.

Marie hummed, "You know, this is a safe space," she said, smiling slightly, "If you miss Tazmin—"

"Marie," I cut her short, finally glancing up to meet her stare, "I've had the last few days of peace without her nearby—so let's just not even say her name."

Marie pursed her lips, "Okay," she whispered, glancing down to her menu.

Until a troubled sigh fell from her lips.

"It's just you're quieter—"

"I'm busy," I corrected her observation, "I've been busy with cases."

Marie nodded silently, leaving the topic alone as she glanced back down to her menu.

And after ordering a glass of wine and appetizers, we seemed to fall into a conversation away from Tazmin.

Which was mostly about what we would be doing tonight.

For once, we contemplated the idea of staying in on a Friday night.

"But there is that new bar," I added, taking a brief sip of my wine.

Marie hummed, "Maybe we should go out. We could stay in tomorrow," she offered.

Which earned a laugh from me, "We always say this," I determined, glancing down to my bright screen that buzzed with a notification.

Specifically, a text from Tazmin.

Which seemed to make me freeze, inhaling a long breath as I stared down at her name on the screen.

"Are you going to open the text or—"

"Yeah, I just, I think you saying her name summoned her," I determined, forcing my tone to grow light as I picked up my phone and unlocked it.
